One of the initiatives introduced at the Feb 2006 BOD meeting was for the BOD to create one or more presentation kits for WGA sponsored introductions to geocaching. The kit(s) would contain GPSrs, compasses, literature and perhaps a projector for a powerpoint presentation. The kit would be loaned out to WGA members to assist in their presentations. What are your thoughts regarding this initiative?

I beleive this is a great Idea. It will help out when putting on demonstrations at nature centers, and schools. This will definetely get the word out.

I only question this: Who would be in charge of them and how would they get to the people who need them? Wisconsin is a big state.

I’m amazed that something like this doesn’t already exist. This, as well as printable materials tuned to everything from putting in cache containers to giving to park management, to giving your local law enforcement to educate them on caching should be a high priority.

I’m 100% in favor of having a presenters kit, as I indicated in my bio.

Logistically, there would be issues to overcome such as: storage location, shipping fees, insurance, who is responsible for lost/damaged equipment, etc.

It seems that our members who give clinics are frequently asking for loaner GPS units, handouts, and materials. We have the funds avaible to put together a well equiped kit, which would include loaner GPS units, and I think a projector would also very valuable.

The items in this kit would also be handy at our WGA event where we encounter people needing a GPS for the day.

I would LOVE to see the kits. The only issue is obtaining them when you need them.. who would be the keeper of the kits so to speak.

It would wonderful to have a general presentation already made up and ready to go. I understand that each of us who hold these classes have different techniques and info to share (i.e. a general GPS usage class), but to have the basics already to go, would be a great help. This way there would be some consisitancy of the teachings yet allowing the for individuality over all.

      Regarding the presentation kit issue:

Dittos to all of the above. This is a reasonable idea, and I doubt if anyone would oppose this, as long as adequate funds are available.

Another great idea where the devil is in the details. 😈 I think it is worth discussing and developing. I know I would use it if it was available.

      (Whew – a short post!)

This initiative will be one of the projects for the Community Education Committee I would like to create. There is a huge need for not just presentation materials, but to have an organized group of volunteers to assist folks who ask for our help with these types of projects. In the last year I have been able to line up helpers for several folks who have requested our assistance and in all those requests, one thing was clear. They need to be able to get their hands on some GPSr’s. I believe this will be on of our next major endeavors, to form and equip a group of volunteers to be able to go into the community and teach WI about geocaching.

I also think the idea of a presentation kit is good.

I do also agree that there would need to be a disscussion on how to properly distribute such a kit out to those who request it. possibly some sort of deposit requirement to go along with the other logistical questions

What goecacher out there dosn’t have this “KIT” already up and running? I mean all cachers got the GPS, some kind of compass, a cache already set up. I think that There would be a new Forum post with upcoming TEACHER SPOTS. I would leave it up to the goecachers around that area to talk at. If there is no one to do it, then it should fall back on the BOD.

This is a topic that closely hits home for me.

The requests I am receiving to offer Geocaching workshops is far exceeding my ability to do them all. I would greatly support creating both a presentation kit plus creating a network of other geocachers who would be willing to take the lead for these other communities.

I have also received requests to offer like a next step workshop for newer geocachers regarding the various software, downloads, pocket queries, paperless.

Last summer I spent a week in Rhinelander attending the Northwoods Academy where I learned how to create online courses. I have the framework created for an online geocaching course that concludes with a day in the field. It might be possible to reach out to different audiences with use of technology as well.

GPS receivers, projector, outlines would all be a great plus to be able to offer. Logistics would be something to set up but not an obstacle by any means.

That works for one on one presenting and teaching, the problem comes in when you have more that just afew people.

I think that most looking for a presentation kit are going to be showing over a dozen people at a time about geocaching. That requires several GPSr units, and would also be best to have the general info presented on a large screen. It would be great if we had a projector that could be used, even if it was an old slide projector that had the presention copied to slides. But a computer projector would be great.

I’ll be helping Hotdogs off trail and natloh2 this coming weekend with a live presentation at a cub scout event. We helped last year, and while we all bring our GPSr units and any spare we may have, it would be good if we had afew more to use. We were able to go in small groups of 3-6 to hunt the temporary caches we hide. It would be great to have 1 per scout instead of 1 per 3-4 scouts.

Also I do not advocate group training using listed geocaches. So having some containers for temporary hides helps as well, though since they are temp, even cheap food storage containers will work.

Dress warmly, guys. I hear we are expecting highs in the single digits.

Probably wise, especially if kids are involved.

I don’t think it will be hard to get GPSrs. I know I have an older one I would donate and I’m sure there are plenty of members like me out there. Buying a projector should be no big deal and the information in presentation form is out there – we would just need to put something together without the need to reinvent the wheel.

I could see a volunteer committee taking the reins of coordinating the presentations. Sounds like fun to me. 8)
