I was all for this…until I saw the cost…I don’t think this is something the WGA should pursue.

It’s true.. it is costly but if we have the desire for them and maybe somehow pre-order, then the refund is a given. I wouldn’t toss the idea out just yet!.
01/29/2007 at 1:50 am #1768512Bunny FuFu, I have to say I agree, if there is a way to determine the pre-order totals, it would give a better count for the feasibility of this project. And, it might come down to a cost to WGA and once that number is determined, could it be looked at as an advertising and marketing expense?
AuntieNae01/29/2007 at 4:58 am #1768513At a $3500 expense in the best case, I don’t see how this could be justified. As a no-dues organization, it is very difficult to justify large expenditures for marketing/recruitment. It would be different if we could recover more by selling more, but that just isn’t the system. I think almost everyone would agree that we could spend this $3500 more wisely.
01/29/2007 at 5:46 am #1768514Looking at it from the standpoint that many teams consist of more than 1 member might also equate to more than one vehicle. I agree $3500 is too high for me but until we have an idea as to the number of vehicles that would purchase the plates, how do we get a better idea as to what this total might be?
01/29/2007 at 3:34 pm #1768515I would have to agree that a minimum $3500 payout is too steep. It is my understanding from reading the posts that would be the cost even if 2000 plates were sold. and if less than 800 are sold “in the first year” then the costs are more than that. I don’t forsee our membership purchasing 800 in the first year. I would much rather have us make window clings or licenseplate frames.
01/29/2007 at 4:25 pm #1768516I wouldn’t consider the idea a total write off. I think it’s a possibility, however, I think we would need to get over 800 people signed up before we start.
To make it happen, I would recommend the following:
- A separate fund would be created for the Special Plate project.
- We would need to have enough people sign up to guarantee an order of at least 800 plates.
- Those wishing to get a plate would need to sign some sort of contract promising to purchase a plate when they are produced, AND:
- A deposit of $25.00 would need to be made to the WGA upon signing the contract. ($20.00 would go to the initial funding of the $15,500. $5.00 would be used to payback the $3,500 dollars that is not refunded to the WGA) Deposit would be refunded if the WGA application for special plates is denied by the DOT.
- If the Plate Application was accepted by the DOT, the WGA would keep the $25.00 deposit fee. This would result in a net income of approximately $12,000.00 for the WGA bank account :).
To sum it up, we can make it happen if we get at least 800 plates pre-ordered, and a $25.00 fee is collected for each plate.
It’s do able, but I’m really not in favor it if at this point.
01/29/2007 at 5:58 pm #1768517There’s 928 members of the WGA. You need to sell 800 plates? I don’t see how that’s going to happen.

Note: For example, if 100 plates are sold in the first year, the group will be refunded $1,500; if 500 plates are sold in the first year, the group will be refunded $7,500; and if 800 plates are sold in the first year, the group will be refunded the entire $12,000.
As per GrouseTales earlier posting…. we don’t HAVE to sell 800, but if we did we’d get back the $12,000. Can’t always look at the BIG picure, but take in in smaller bits.
01/29/2007 at 11:15 pm #1768519Wow, Brian, I really like your approach on this issue. By my math, that means that we would need to get guarantees for 620 plate orders to reach the $15500 limit. Nothing to say we can’t take multiple “orders” from one team/person, as long as they deposit the money. Same with “out of staters” who may want to purchase a plate. One thing about “repurchases”, however. I believe we would only get credit for the initial purchase of the plate, but not for when people renew that plate each year. Anyone know that for sure?
02/01/2007 at 2:34 am #1768520Impressive legwork Brian! This seems like quite a stretch. I can’t imagine feeling comfortable supporting such a huge finacial commitment that I honestly don’t see enough of an upside for. Too much risk. Too little reward.
I know there’s been a lot of discussion of the WGA’s finances in the past several months and it’s always been reported that we’re doing fine. If our motivation for a vanity plate was to produce revenue, I think it would be misguided. Personally, I’d rather pay a $25 membership fee before I’d buy the plate. I also think there’s too much competition with other plates out there. Are WGA members going to trade their UW system or Packer plate for a WGA one?
02/01/2007 at 2:19 pm #1768521By my count, there is interest from 6 people for buying the plates to this point. I think it would fiscally irresponsible to invest so much money into a project that would benefit so few people.
If payments for plate orders were taken in advance that would completely offset the cost, well then maybe. I doubt that would happen.
The figure of $15,000 was mentioned to get this project off the ground. That money would buy a large number of park benches! Or GPSr’s for demo kits.
I would vote no.
Edited besuase I kanet spels

Only 6 people because we are the only ones discussing the point. I have a feeling that a whole lot of people are NOT reading this deep into this threat and adding opinions, because it IS for the candidates.
Just an opinion……beat me with a paddle later!! LOL 😆
