Our presentation went very well last night but have two questions for the group.

1.) quick and easy for someone like Jeremy… What was the first WI cache and when and where was it put out?

2.) How do you answer the question, “What is the most favorite “thing” you found in a cache?”

We found a laminated Brett Favre football card in a cache commemorating his game performance against Oakland right after his father died. It had a price sticker on it for $30. Did it fall out of someones pocket and into the ammo box or was it a Bears fan throwing out trash?

    1. Wisconsin’s first geocache was called Geocache (GC3D). It was placed on Aug. 27, 2000 but never found before it went missing and was abandoned by its owner. Jeremy Irish archived it after I notified him that it was missing. Wisconsin’s oldest active geocache is Pike Powder Hike (GC3B1), which I hid on March 2, 2001.

    2. cash 😀

I have a lot of people ask me what the my favorite thing was and I always tell them the cache itself. To me whats inside doesn’t matter its just the trill of the hunt. but hey I am still a rookie. But this might be a good poll or new thread just to see what people have found.

As far as swag is concerned, I haven’t really seen anything cool. I did get a real thrill of excitement when I found my first travel bug in a cache, particularly since the guy who left it there hadn’t logged it yet and it was a surprise. We ended up finding 2 travel bugs that same day, both as a surprise.

The best thing I ever found though was, as mentioned before, the cache itself on a very challenging puzzle multi in Oshkosh’s Menominee Park. There was an extra of satisfaction and accomplishment that we normally don’t experience to that extent when we find most caches.

I collected silver beads in a series of caches in Georgia when I first started geocaching. These are the neatest thing I have found so far.

The first Geocoin was also a cool experience as it was a “caching with kids” coin that I brought back to wisconsin with me and helped it meet it’s goal by placing it in a cache while caching with all of my kids.

I like the “trade a coin” type cache as I also collect coins.

The favorite thing I found is kind of hard to describe. It was a cute toy stuffed mouse (still with tags attached) about 6″ tall wearing a football jersey and helmet. When you pressed a button it would sing, call out cheers (u-rah-rah words, words, words) or have funny/snarky comments about the opposing team and/or coach. The thing was hilarious and I had to bring it in to work (it was dressed in red & white, like the Badgers). Everybody got a big laugh, but nobody would believe that I found it in a box in the woods.

Besides the football fan mouse thing, I’m always thrilled to find a foreign coin in a cache to add to my collection.

two years ago my daughter found a wrist watch … still in the packaging … she still uses it.

I found a weather radio at a cache which required a canoe trip to get. We left a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant.

Thanks for the answers on the first WI caches Ken.

We feel that the journey to caches are the “reward” more often than any “things” we find. Hard to explain that to non-cachers until they find a few. Not to say that there isn’t some good stuff in some caches, just not our purpose for caching. Guess it is that “treasure hunt” thinking.
