I just picked up my new Garmin eTrex HCx from W**mart this afternoon, but cannot figure out how to download a “Pocket Query”, even though I upgraded to becoming a gc “member”.

I know that I am a beginner at geocaching, but it seems to me that I should be able to download to the new gps regardless, but, of course, I could be wrong …

    A 10000 foot look:

    1. Login to your account.
    2. Create the PQ, making sure to set it to run today (by choosing day of week).
    3. Click ok to save, and then wait. You don’t actually download it from the site, you get it emailed to you.
    4. While waiting, download a copy of GSAK and install, while not required it makes it much easier to get the pq to unit. Start reading the basics of how to set it up and connect your gps.
    5. Once your pq arrives, save it to your local drive and then import it into GSAK.
    6. Massage it how you see fit and then use the GPS menu on gsak to send it to your gps (I’m guessing the HCx has a usb connection, if not its still possible).

Sounds easy right? Well, its a little daunting at first but just getting waypoints into a gps is pretty easy once you have gsak setup.

I have a Mac and cannot use GSAK. I needed to download MacCaching. If that is what you use, that is pretty easy as well. I believe you can do more with GSAK. MacCaching just came out with a new version that I have yet to look at.

GSAK stands for Geocaching Swiss Army Knife. If you go to your account page on GC.com, click on resources on the upper left side of the page. Go down to third party resources and click helpful hints. Now, under geocaching.com, click on geocaching software. Scroll down to windows application. You will find it there.

I have the same model GPS and I needed nothing special to download waypoints to it. GSAK is geocaching swiss army knife. google it and you will find the install. great program. load the result of the pq into gsak and then there is an option to send to GPS.

Here’s the URL for help with Pocket Queries: http://www.markwell.us/pq.htm

Garmin also provides directions for paperless caching using GSAK and the Garmin Poiloader programs although I’m not sure if it applies to your model…they haven’t updated there info in a while and I don’t know how new your model is:

Bah! You don’t need any $$$ program to simply download waypoints into your GPSr.

Download Easy GPS and use that.

Once your pocket query is mailed to you, simply open it with EasyGPS then download it. You can always make the jump to GSAK at a later date.
