It appears as though the recent log page of WGA isn’t updating. Is it just too cold to go geocaching?

01/15/2005 at 7:00 pm #1748289Every season offers challenges: Right now ask yourself
1) would you rather be geocaching when the wood ticks find you while you find the cache?
2) would you rather be out in rainstorms and mudslides (I know I’m exagerating)?
3) Would you rather be out when the mosquitoes are feasting on you?
4) would you rather be out on the hottest of hottest days?
5) or would you let the cold stop you?I enjoy geocaching in all seasons. And I will tolerate the “challenges” that weather and the 4 season’s offer.
So, I’ll see you on the trail? Tami

01/15/2005 at 7:49 pm #1748290There have been no updates on the recent logs page since the 11th. I know I’ve posted a note since then and my mother who just got her own account just yesterday went back to log the caches she found with us – none of this is showing up. Acutally just look at the date it says it last updated and it says the 11th. Soooooo….somethings not right here.
As for caching in the winter, it definately has its advantages. However, greyhounder and I called off our plans for today with this extreme cold. Once the temps get back into the 20s or so, you will see us on the trails again!

There were some recent changes to the script that runs recent logs. We will look into it.

Come on now, jthorson, kbraband, the beast, GrouseTales and FlushingGrouse were out on the trails this morning. A little hot coffee served from the tailgate and we were off to the trails

OK, I figured I might get some grief for that, but you try taking my kids out on a day like this and listen to their whining for a while! I can put 10 layers on them and they will still complain about being cold. 😉
Plus, I’ve heard of GPSr screens freezing up. Exactly at what temperature does that occur?
01/16/2005 at 2:24 am #1748293I know this may be getting a little off the subject, but last January, I found a couple caches on a subzero day (-5), and my Garmin e-trex Legend handled it allright. I’ll admit..I wasn’t out there too long for either cache, especially with my son whining at me the whole time.
01/16/2005 at 6:03 am #1748294I’ve “unfrozen” the recent logs page and it should be working again. Thanks for letting us know it wasn’t working properly!
01/17/2005 at 2:06 pm #1748295Tami, I’m with you! After spending 11 hours hiding caches with Don of the AstroD-Team this weekend for “The Great Northwoods Gathering”, to be held in a couple of weeks, it’s not so bad even when way below zero. See you up North at the Gathering.

Kids are strange that way. If you could convince them that other kids are doing it they might respond differently. And I guess hot coffee served off the tailgate is not much incentive for them.
GPSr screens freeze at minus eleventy-three degrees. .

LOL! Thanks – I’ll keep that in mind.
01/18/2005 at 2:52 am #1748298My GPSr screen “freezes” in this weather. As it gets colder and colder, the display becomes lighter and lighter and eventually it looks like it is turned off. Today while hiking in the Kettle Moraine, I had to put it inside my coat for awhile several times to warm it up so the screen would be legible. My PDA is even worse.
My biggest problem is regulating my temperature. I can stay warm and will often find myself too warm. Take off a layer till i’m cold, then put it pack on. Repeating PITA cycle.
Short caching trips in and out of the car over & over are a pain too. I have found it best to just leave the car heat off or on very low. Try to keep body temp constant.
