I know people have tried collecting data from the geocaching.com server & got shut out after awhile…. How does the recent logs page work? I also notice that sometimes I can click on the most recent log & that persons log has not appeared on the cache page. How does happen?

I have noticed that when getting the email notification from gc.com about someone logging our cache when I go to the cache page the person’s log is not there. It eventually shows up. If all the info is being pulled from a database a person would think that the page would be made when it’s accessed. I guess we will have to blame the server for caching the page. How the page works for the recent finds? I have wondered that also.

Ah, now that would be telling, wouldn’t it?

I first saw this feature on another states website. I asked for the code, and was told by its author to be careful, as he had once made a mistake in the code that caused a denial of service attack on geocaching.com. That’s what started Jeremy’s lockdown of data mining. This person’s script logged into geocaching.com and accessed all the caches in that state one by one looking for new log entries.

So, I scrapped his idea, and started working on my own solution that would not put such a load on geocaching.com. Here is what I developed…

The code on the WGA server:

[*]Browses every 15 minutes to the ‘Recent Logs’ page at geocaching.com[*]Filter out all entries that are not for Wisconsin caches[*]Strip out geocaching.com page formatting and add in WGA page formatting[*]Add the timestamp and build the page[/list]

      There ya go!

Oh that’s how it’s done. Before, I was impressed by its apparent complexity. Now I’m impressed by its actual simplicity.

Duh… Don’t know how I missed that. I was looking for something more complicated. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Ever since the snow melted down, I’ve been noticing a lot less pink frowns on the recent logs page.

OK, I give up… Why do so many of them have lines through them? Those logged from today are fine. Those logged prior all have the “Strike” line through them. I didn’t notice an explanation but assumed it was an error in the code or just to designate what was today’s versus what was other days.

Hmm, your note made me look. I had not seen those strike-through lines before. I’ll ask CacheCows to see if they know what’s up with the lines.

It appears -Glen Oaks Grab- by Bobcatw98 had embedded in its name. This is HTML for strike through. This was picked up by CacheCows screen scrape and since there was no it ran wild through the rest of the list.
