A couple weeks ago, The Beast and I were discussing the COTM and some of its “issues”. As part of the discussion, the Recommended Caches forum came up as a “possible alternative”. Later, as we were driving home, I was thinking about why this forum isn’t used more. I came to the conclusion that getting the information out of the forum was not all that convenient, being that you have to step through the forum, and look up each individual cache, many of which don’t have links. And what is the best way to remedy this situation….A bookmark list of all the recommendations. Make that a BIG bookmark list of the recommendations, 358 caches big!

Here is the link. Jeremy, do you need any more info?

This list contains all the non-archived caches ever recommended in the RC forum. When a series was recommended, I included all the caches in the series, with 4 exceptions: Aesop’s Villa By The Sea, Along The Milky Way, Clue, and Flag. These series all had clear “final” caches, where finding the final was dependent on finding the rest of the series. I would be willing to add these other caches as well, but I’m curious whether people think that’s necessary.

Note that if you are an owner of a recommend series who likes to add and delete caches from the series (Zuma!), let me know about the additions. I can catch the archives on my own.

Also, the list currently includes caches far away from Wisconsin. I’m tempted to limit the list to Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois, and delete off the caches in Nevada, Massachusetts, etc. Again, I would like to hear people’s opinion on the best way to handle this.

One last thing: while you CAN browse this list online, it is really more effective to download this into a database like GSAK or EasyGPS. This really pushes the bookmark display engine on GC.com, to the point where it occasionally breaks and you need to start over (relaunch the webpage). Have fun with this!

What’s the current limit for a Bookmark? 500? What happens when you reach it?

I’m hiring the Fu as my new assistant to answer questions regarding the bookmark list.

And yes, we can start another list. I will be surprised if it is necessary, as I am not keeping archived caches on the list.

Great idea Dave… and thanks for volunteering to keep the list up to date for us (in addition to the COTM honorable mention bookmark list, which is another great source of caches our members felt were above average). I guess one big advantage of this list vs. the COTM honorable mention list is that caches that are not be eligible for COTM (i.e. out of state) can be recommended.

It’s too bad you can’t bookmark another bookmark list (i.e. have nested bookmark lists). This would have made it a lot easier to include the big series (Yellowstone, 52-pickup, Bjornson) in this new list. And what is the deal with the display problems with the big bookmark lists… these bugs have been there since the bookmark list feature was introduced.

I’ve added a link to the bookmark list to our “Bookmark Lists Favorites” wiki page, and also added a “sticky” post in the Recommended Caches forum to tip people off that this bookmark list exists.

i think you could safely delete those caches from farther away states, and maybe have a separate list for those closer states. keep the main recommended list for just wisconsin caches.

Thanks for the input, Donna. Actually, that is not what I had in mind. Many people who would use the list are much closer to some of the border caches than caches at the opposite end of the state. When cleaning up the database, I was surprised to find that I am actually closer to the caches recommended in Missouri than the caches in Bayfield county. My thoughts were to maybe delete the caches in California, Nevada, Massachusetts, and Ohio (and probably Missouri, distance notwithstanding).

That said, once I got the file in GSAK, the distant caches were not much of a bother, so I’m tempted just to leave them there. Its easy enough to filter for only the Wisconsin caches if someone wants to do that.
