So, what are the best caches to hit in Vilas County?

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

This golden oldie was a LOT of fun: GCD8E.  But beware, you will have to walk through a patch of poison ivy to get to it, so maybe don’t wear sandals.  🙂  It’s a little hike through the woods to a peninsula, you walk out on this thin isthmus to the peninsula where the cache is.  There’s old ruins on the peninsula and the woods are just so pretty!  I would definitely recommend that one, I’d give it a couple of favorite points if I could.

Thanks Becca-That was on our radar last year but we ran out of time. Looks like there are some new trail caches in St. Germain, too: https://coord.info/GC6H6A3

I just saw that the Ammo Can at the St. Germain Chamber went missing and is now disabled 🙁 I may contact them and offer a replacement container.

GC1Z7GQ is a good one with lots of favorite points…GCXB1A is a great hike to a very scenic location…GC37GKP has a great history…and I’d recommend the gadget cache GC2ZM2K but the container appears to have gone missing. GC4HT2G is at a unique place. GC5XRAW and GC2MD1A are both great TB hotels. Hope you enjoy your time there…it’s a beautiful area. My wife and I have been spending a week at Star Lake every summer for our anniversary the last few years 🙂

Thanks! I will check those out. We stay on Little St Germain Lake every year. We have done a good handful up there in that area and have gotten an idea for one of our own caches thanks to rustycrayfish.

I just found the Longbridge at Manitowish Waters. Those along the bike trail would be others to find.

The great and powerful Wizard of OC has completed his spring maintenance on the Yellow Brick Road series. I ran into him while doing maintenance on my own Where the Wild Things Are series of caches. Together we have 45 caches along the Oconto River Trail. But, the Wiz announced that this year, 2017, will be his last season of maintaining his caches 🙁

I thought I’d update this part of the forum with some of the best caches I’ve found in this part of the state in the recent past. Last fall I completed the Catwalk Series by WI Hibiscus, GC738RD, between Townsend and Wabeno…great autumn colors and a wonderful exhilarating hike through a very scenic area. Over in Door County, there are a number of fun caches…Scope Out Nature, GC7519Y, in Sturgeon Bay…Labzone’s Everyday Heroes GC6AYRG, Twisted Metal GC4HKG6, and Mission Control GC5RCDC…and Brussels Two’s Uncopyrightable-Brussels Style GC566TM, Well, well, well-This is an Amazing Cache GC53DGQ, and A Hole in One GC3GF75. Most of these are “gadget caches” and I can’t go without adding Icy Paws gadget cache in Appleton…Geocacher’s Playground GC78P01. Or the Wizard of OC’s Dorothy Gale V2.0 GC5R4C2 in Oconto. They’ve made geocaching very fun for me. Thanks to all for your ingenuity, imagination, and creativity. Be sure to check them out if you’re in the area 🙂

It’s official. The Yellow Brick Road series will be archived at the end of December, 2018. So sez the mighty Wizard. Will see if Elton John is right…if there is life beyond the Yellow Brick Road.
