No, not my feet!
seriously though, can anyone tell me how to get food odors out of potential cache containers?
I have several containers ready for caches, but one smells like peanut butter and the other like coffee. Both conatiners are plastic.
I’ve tried alcohol, frebreeze and bleach. I still smell coffee and PB. Is there a way to get the smell out???
I really don’t want the forrest critters running off with my caches!

08/14/2006 at 3:09 pm #1764518As for peanut butter containers, several of the Clue caches are PB jars. All I did to them was run them through the dishwasher twice. I have yet to have animal problems with them.
I’ve never tried a coffee can. (Although from some caches I’ve found, the plastic Folgers coffee containers seem to hold up in Outdoorland about as well as Gladware…)
08/14/2006 at 3:43 pm #1764519I’m trying all of these at the same time. I have color newsprint working on a plastic coffee container. I have charcoal working on the same. Then I have baking soda working the peanut butter jar. I will post the results in a few days.

I think I’ll toss the coffe can after the experiment. I would prefer my cache be better protected then Gladware! Thanks for the info Dave.
08/14/2006 at 8:14 pm #1764521One more to try…. clean kitty litter.
Timberline Echoes08/15/2006 at 10:36 pm #1764522OK, here are the results so far.
The color newsprint worked like a charm! I’m really surprised. I didn’t expect it too.
The charcoal seems to have worked as well, but left a bit of smokey scent behind.
And Baking soda worked well too. I can’t believ I didn’t think of that one myself. Uhm… We keep a box in the fridge for just this purpose. LOL
Have not had a chance to try the kitty litter yet.
08/16/2006 at 4:37 am #1764523Have you tried vinegar? I use it to clean animal cages… it might work with this too.
08/16/2006 at 1:39 pm #1764524Vinegar does sound like it would work too, but I’m all out of containers to experiment with for now. I’m going to have to get Tyedyeskykid to eat up some more PB, and Tyedyeskygal to start pounding the coffee!
It appears that all the above ideas work well. The coffee smell was completly removed by charcoal and newsprint. The smokey smell left behind by the charcoal is gone today. Baking soda is doing it’s job but seems to be taking the longest.
