How often have you seen this on a cache page?
What’s ‘short’?
I’ve seen this phrase used for everything from 500 feet to 1.5 mile (one way!).
Instead of saying ‘requires a short hike’, I’d like to see caches stating how far it actually is.
And be accurate! I have seen caches which specify a distance, which turns out to be extremely ficticious!
Remember, you have a wonderful electronic gadget that MEASURES distance, so USE IT!
Ok, I’m done ………for now.
10/31/2007 at 11:22 pm #1880772Another good point, one that unfortunately will probably never have a concrete answer. Just like many other points in the game.

My interpretation of “short” is less than 1/2 mile one way but definitely not longer than that. But like you said.. others may think differently.
11/01/2007 at 12:30 am #1880774One of the major reasons I can see for specifing the actual distance is for cachers with families (little kids) and person with physical limits. Knowing in advance would help in their deciding on if they should do the cache.

Also for recovering cripples! 😆

This would be very helpful for us as we qualify for both category’s. Having small children and one with a physical limitation I would really like to know the distance to the cache from the obvious or posted cords. I may have to go back on my caches and put in the distance if it would require a bit of a hike.
In other words I agree with this.
11/01/2007 at 1:27 am #1880777I totally agree. In fact I have often thought that it would be great if geocaching.com provided a “distance from parking” field that people would fill in when creatig a new cache. It could be optional (just as container size is) if the owner doesn’t want to say or if there are multiple answers depending on where you park.
11/01/2007 at 11:08 am #1880778Distance as the crow flies? It seems that many people take many different routes. Just a thought.
11/01/2007 at 11:51 am #1880779I agree and already do this on most of my caches that have a walk longer than one quarter of a mile….it’s information I think should be on every cache page.
11/01/2007 at 3:04 pm #1880780Probably more important would be to provide parking coordinates. I am still amazed how many caches which can only be done from a single area do not provide parking coordinates (preferably using the waypoint format). It makes finding the cache much easier and makes you aware if the hike is longer than you would like.
Merely publishing the distance from parking to the cache is not going to be very useful. Finding the correct path can be essential because some parks can have very long hikes if you didn’t pick the right path. If someone says it is only a short hike, this tells me to not do much bushwhacking.
11/01/2007 at 5:56 pm #1880781I think Marc should be required to post parking coordinates and distance from the parking on all of his puzzle caches!

I’ll second that motion!!! 😈
11/01/2007 at 9:15 pm #1880783Do they have to be the correct cords for each cache, or could I mix them up?

OK, here’s the coords N44.17.200 W 88.17.00. (Nice rounds numbers, hey!?)
It’s the corner of Main Street and Rosehill Road, and it’s a good place to park for all of my puzzles. (Well, not the Technicality one or Dead End 4000).
Now, anyone going to llok for any?
