I have this Compaq Presario 2100 that died out on me. I don’t think it would be totally dead if I had a charged battery, but the connection on the back for the power cord just pooped out on me and the battery had died. Does anyone know of a place where one could get a loaner battery for purposes of retrieving photo files and the like? Or is there a way separate from the computer to get that battery recharge?
Some nice photos are stuck there, as well as a couple for Marc’s Cemetery challenge.

OOhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh………….
I thought Marc was stuck in your camera. Many people might ask you to leave him there.
02/25/2009 at 12:41 am #1902731As long as its just the battery, you could buy a laptop hardrive USB enclosure. You would have to pull the Laptops harddrive out to use it, but would be able to just plug the drive into another computers USB port to pull all the files off.
The only issue is There are two possible drive types, IDE or SATA. below are links to both types of enclosures. I’ve used the first one with great success.

02/25/2009 at 12:43 am #1902732Well Mathman, you were no help, but that made me laugh!
I’m thinking what I’m gonna have to do is find someone who has the same battery OR computer that still makes a connection, beg to either borrow their charged battery, or charge my battery in their laptop. Do any computer geek places do this for a small fee? I probably need the battery to remain charged for only an hour or so while I email the files or save them on a jump drive.
I really should have saved those photos when I could see the computer was going wonky. Darn!
hogrod, what’s going on is the connection at the back of the computer started getting cruddy; if I pushed it just so, it would stay connected, although at times, it would go to battery power and that’s what ran the battery down. Now there is no way I can get that connector to “click,” the computer is effectively ‘dead’ and when I checked into the cost of replacing the needed parts, it was not cost effective. How hard is it to remove the hard drive from the original laptop?
02/25/2009 at 12:58 am #1902733I fix lots of computers, but have only worked on a few laptops. The small few I have fixed it was as easy as removing a plastic cover from the bottom of the machine and removing a few screws and sliding the drive out.
There is more than one cover on the bottom of most laptops, but the hardrive is easy to distinguish as its usually the largest one. you will have possible covers for Processor, ram & wifi card, and harddrive.
another possibility is to have someone re-solder the power connection that broke on the back of your machine. This is actually a more common problem than you might think.
02/25/2009 at 1:28 am #1902734trekin and birdin you can check out the computer exchange shop on hwy 100 and i think it is Cleavland but it is on the west side of the road south of greenfield i know it is vague but i know they have older computers and battery’s for sale you might be able to go in there ask them if you can borrow a battery and then sell your laptop to them. just a thought.
02/25/2009 at 1:48 am #1902735Thanks for all the different ideas and resources. I think one way or the other, I feel confident I can save my photos.
Thanks again!
02/25/2009 at 3:48 pm #1902736There’s always eBay There are tons of batteries for sale there. You may even be able to score an entire laptop for the price of a battery.
02/25/2009 at 4:40 pm #1902737Come to the Wausau Event this Weekend and I’m sure we can figure something out 🙂
Can you describe in further detail why you say the connection on the back “pooped” out? If it’s your power supply that’s pooped then I might have one that will work. Have to research. I’ve got an armada M700 and I know it uses the same voltage but it might be a different connector.
If nothing else, I can help you get the hard drive out and one of those external cases mentioned by hogrod would be really nice. The beauty of that is that you can then use it as a portable hard drive now and forever more and those can be really handy! Especially for carrying around RAW canon files.
02/25/2009 at 4:46 pm #1902738LB, I can’t make it. 😥 I have another commitment. Trekkin’ is contemplating it, however, and if he does, maybe I can send it along with him. Maybe.
02/25/2009 at 4:54 pm #1902739I just had the harddrive in my work laptop swapped out and the tech that worked on my laptop had a cord that essentially turned the internal hard drive into an external USB hard drive that he then plugged into onther PC to copy files off of. It had a connector on one end compatible with 2 different types of hard drive connections and a USB on the other for connecting to another PC. Not sure what a cable like that might cost or if you can even get one but it looked pretty handy.

02/25/2009 at 5:39 pm #1902740Sorry 😥 I thought I could help you out and called home to have dad check ours. It’s a 1600 and according to the internet search I just did, the batteries are totally different.

I’ve got one of those at home. It has the interface for Desktop IDE/Laptop IDE/SATA dirves and connects through the USB port. I think it only cost me about $30. I’ve only had to use it a couple times.
02/26/2009 at 1:04 am #1902742A broken power supply jack should be a pretty easy fix. I’ll bring some tools along in case Trekkin’ makes it on Saturday.
