For the last 2 weekends I’ve been up in Rhinelander and I’ve really been enjoying WoodCarverDan’s gadget caches! They are so much fun! They are creative and have just enough challenge to get you thinking but they’re not so hard they become frustrating. Like the caches pages say, you’ve got to have some patience – becoming forceful with them could lead to harm and none of us want that.
But if you’re looking for a day trip or live in the local area, Rhinelander is a great place to find some real fun caches. I don’t know if there’s a bookmark list of them or not (I supposed I should have checked or made one myself) but just look for the caches with alot of favorites on them ๐ You won’t be disappointed!
I really do appreciate how much thought, care, and creativity (And I’m sure blood, sweat, and tears) Dan has put into these caches. They are truly meant to be found and for people to enjoy them. They give you the feeling of enjoyment and intrigue as when you first started caching ๐ These are not forgettable bison tube / matchstick caches which are so prevalent – these you will remember for a long time!!
I had my kids with me while we solved and while they probably aren’t all kid-solvable, my kids thought they were awesome! We’ve been to Bank Heist 3 times now! once for the find and 2 times because they wanted to show friends & mom.
I know every cache can’t be a “Bank Heist” (nor should they be) but these kinds of caches really put the spark in the game and I hope the creativity and inspiration spreads throughout the whole state!
A few to get started:
Bank Heist – http://coord.info/GC4G1W6
Home at the YMCA – http://coord.info/GC492P9
Numbers, A Key, & A combination – http://coord.info/GC4DPN9
Crooked Climb – http://coord.info/GC4DPMZ08/19/2013 at 5:50 pm #1971713We agree and echo your words. WCD put a great deal of time into his caches, keeps the fun going and is worth the trip. Happy we live so close.
TE10/02/2013 at 2:23 pm #1971714Bank Heist was a fun cache for me, made more difficult my the face that I attempted it at 11:30 at night thinking I could still be FTF on that one. Patience grasshopper. I can’t let Rhinelander’s Ultimate Trackable Hotel not get mentioned here tho: http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC4AJJC_rhinelanders-ultimate-trackable-hotel When I was in Rhinelander this past July, I was staying less than 300 feet away from this cache and ended up getting this one for Get Outdoors Day.
BTW, I’ve been having the worst time with Keys to Happiness #1 – http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC4FB3Z_key-to-happiness-1 I got the first lock open, but I can’t get the second one open. Any hints anyone?

Bolt cutters?
๐ That’s what I first thought when I hunted this cache back in July. Aw man, I gotta see if my neighbor upstairs parents still have the ones I saw them with this spring, but they’re from all they way over in Minnesota somewhere.
But seriously, I might be making a return trip to Rhinelander this weekend for something else, so if anyone’s done this cache and can enlighten me somehow, please feel free to contact me through GC or my e-mail: [email protected]-The Happy Hodag!

10/13/2013 at 11:25 pm #1971717After a futile half hour attempt at Keys to Happiness #1, I’ve decided that that cache will be my one and only ignore list cache. I still might have the coords in my GPS, I might not, and I could rule out future attempts, I might not.

08/08/2014 at 10:48 pm #1971718I’m not one to brag, so this is why I’m posting this two months later. I finally got Keys to Happiness #1 two months ago. I didn’t use bolt cutters, but I did have a chainsaw in the car just in case. ๐

08/10/2014 at 11:52 pm #1971719Just got back from Eagle River area, had to do a few WCD caches, they are all awesome caches, failed at the Bank Heist, but the TB Hotel, Call Box, WCD’s 100th hide were all great.
08/11/2014 at 10:37 am #1971720I’m going to be in the area in 2 weeks, doing a couple of Jasmer caches… will have to drive down there to try these caches out… thanks for pointing them out! ๐
08/25/2014 at 11:05 pm #1971721We got all of the caches this morning, except 2, as we ran out of time. I did enjoy them and glad that you pointed them out. Thanks!!
