My preference is for the 23-25 of June and we would be willing to share what ever site DCExplorer is on. at this point it would probably be my self and can’t sit still. I will check with along 4 the ride and allergic to housework. allergic to house work would like me home on fathers day to possibly visit our fathers.

Bummer. AstroD-Team and Astronomers Lighthouse Hunters will not be attending. I hope you all have a fun weekend though!! We’ll be camping with 18 cub scouts that weekend down south.

Boy we are striking out on being able to attend events this year. [ ]

The weekend after Father’s Day works great for me. Although I would probably get my own site, I would be happy to pitch in for fees and firewood for the group site.

The group site will make for the ultimate spot for the nightly gathering around the campfire and discussion of beer and Johnny Cash. Now all we need is a guitar player.

    So it is written…

    So shall it be.

June 23, 24, 25 (the weekend AFTER Father’s Day and the weekend BEFORE the July 4th weekend)

It’s too bad a weekend didn’t magically materialize that EVERYONE could attend, but that almost never happens.

Next topic… Does somebody wish to volunteer with me to reserve the group site?

If I could at least partner with another person to defray the initial expense, it would be appreciated…

It would probably be easiest to set a flat fee of about $25 per person/group/family and use any potential profit for firewood or adult beverages.

Like Cathunter, we’ll probably get our own site. If Patriot1 and the Geopoo can make it, they’ll probably stay with us. We are willing to put up a little venture capitol to get things started reserving the group site anyway. We were thinking fifty bucks would be affordable for us. Perhaps a few other cachers that are planning to attend could send in an estimated amount for their camping, and we should be able to raise the needed amount for the reservation.

We could send the money via PayPal, but it only takes a day to mail a check over to Sturgeon Bay and that would save PayPal fees.

Now that it seems like the event is going ahead, I have some thoughts on the event caches.

The cache race was an entertaining group activity and I hope that DCexplorer sets up another. It might be nice to have a few more caches placed for hunting while hiking the island over the course of the weekend. Perhaps some cachers that have visited the island before could bring a cache or two for temporary placement and set them out soon after arrival. We could then compile a master list at the group site for entry into GPSrs. In this way, everyone would have a few new caches to seek and it would take some of the workload off of DCexplorer.

In addition to actual caches, a list of some of the island’s highlights could provided for newcomers, sort of like virtual caches.

A while back, I built a switch box for loading coordinates to and from GPSrs and a laptop at event caches. If deemed useful, I could bring it along to the event.

Its nice to see this wonderful event have a forum, and glad to see planning for this years event start.
Being on the west coast of the state, my proximity to rock island is half way round the world to most of you, but I am willing to help out with what I can. Just let me know what I can help with.
Fathers day weekend works best for myself, it’s not overly crowded and, the weekend of the 24th is the renewable energy fair. Last year I put off the fair, but need to attend this year.

I think it would be great to have one of the group campsites for social gatherings and beer testing. TS, Is there a Beer fund set up?

Right now, one for sure regardless of the weekend. Maybe little man depending upon his mothers schedule.

Before I start collecting donations, does everybody think a group site is a good thing? It seems most of you are planning on getting your own sites anyway. Does this make sense to get a group site?

Even know I’m new to all this it seems like everyone has loads of fun at the events. I just have a few questions though. Is this event open to new members? My hubby and I think this sounds like a fun weekend. Has the date been set yet? I saw in pre posts that there were still dates floating around. And my last question for now is are any of the sites at rock island grass covered? Thanks, Tracy

I’m going to answer the questions posed over the last few days in one log.

No beer fund has been set up yet. The tasting proved quite popular at last year’s event. We also learned that cachers are quite adventurous in trying real beer. We’ll be bringing a much wider selection this year. And plenty of Blatz.

We feel that a group site is a very good idea. Last year our group was spread out all over the island. The only time we really all got together was Saturday’s cookout and tasting. Having a group site will afford us a private headquarters area where we can store group related stuff and arrange hikes and other activities. While we lean towards getting our own site, we haven’t decided for sure yet, we may stay with the group.

I suggested earlier that a modest event fee be asked to cover some of the costs. Just having a campfire at the group would save everyone money as they wouldn’t need to have their own fire burning all evening. If we had twenty people attend at five dollars per adult and half of them stayed at the group site and were charged an extra five dollars for camping, we’d have two hundred dollars. That would cover the cost of the site with thirty bucks to spare for firewood.

Of course, if we had forty people attend, we’d have way too much cash. In this event, we could refund the excess amongst us, donate it to Friends of Rock Island (they restored the lighthouse), or appoint a treasurer to hold it to finance future getaways. Any overage would only amount to a few dollars per person, so we shouldn’t need to wrestle over the decision. And should we come out short, we’ll just have to put out a donations can.

    litleflrt’s questions:

Event caches are by rule open to all cachers; they won’t be approved for publication otherwise. So, yes, everyone is welcome to attend, and you’ll be glad you did; Rock Island is a unique place and it’s a great event.

The date is tentatively set for June 23, 24, 25 (the weekend AFTER Father’s Day and the weekend BEFORE the July 4th weekend).

Rock Islands sites are generally wooded with sparse grass if any. Most are well drained and don’t get real muddy. The exceptions are the group sites, which are grass covered. There is a lot of information about what to expect on Rock Island on the previous year’s cage page logs:
