We re-watched Cars this past weekend and decided that we would cache Route 66 this fall. Now we are looking for suggested caches. I am sure that there are more than enough to keep us busy, but we don’t want to miss any really great ones.
Suggestions?…….
03/11/2008 at 12:27 pm #1886054I have done perhaps 10-12 caches along sections of Route 66 in Arizona, and they are all worth the time. Usually hidden close to the road, but the drive is the goal.
I do not remember any specific caches along 66 in Illinois. However, I do know that there are multiple sections of the road in places.
For example, around Springfield, you will find Route 66 1930-1931 and Route 66 1931-1933.
It would be nice for local cachers to create some bookmarks for this type of cache.

TEI’ll be the smart aleck and reply: geo
(Still disliking the cutesy abbreviation “caching” for “geocaching” but realizing I am all alone in this.)

TE03/12/2008 at 12:31 am #1886059I guess we are all guilty of using the word cache when we mean geocache. But that aside, We are planning on taking our time (10-12 days) on the way there (LA) and making time (4 days) on the way back. Harley’s or a convertible sound great, but they would be way over our budget; we will have to settle for rolling back the sun roof and rolling down the windows.
We have taken a peek at some of the geocaches along the route and agree with Marc. The descriptions of geocaches in Illinois don’t seem as inviting as those of Arizona. We shall see.
Any other comments?.. we have plenty of time (September or October).

There is a really cool mountain / overlook just NE of Albuquerque, with its own Virtual cache: GCD892
It’s only about 20 miles off of “The Mother Road”
Speaking of which:
03/12/2008 at 2:35 am #1886061Hi T&TB,
Here are some of the caches I have visited on Route 66, that I think you may like:
A fun multi, that is right on the old road, north of Springfield, Illinois: GC1445X.
In Springfield, Illinois, you wont want to miss Lincoln’s home: GC963C
(This waypoint is on several bookmark lists of Route 66, and I am guessing those would be most helpful.)Also in Springfield, you will want to visit the viritual cache of Lincoln’s tomb: GC963C
One of my all time favorite viritual caches is on the IL/MO state line, on the now nonused Route 66 bridge, and you should definately not miss this one: GC2258
A neglected piece of old cemetary, between Springfield and St Louis: GCP489.
A park and grab, right on 66, with an old Route 66 diner next door that has cheap slow food: GC15THV
And a road cut in Missouri: GCG5R7. Also I see this cache page has links to other caches along Route 66.
Hope that gets ya started.
