i just got back from a trip to florida and had a hard time caching. the routing function on my 60C was not working right. most times i could be within 3 blocks of the cache and the unit tried to route us something like 50-100 miles roundtrip to the cache. i’m using mapsource, and loaded the set of maps for florida. anybody know what went wrong? sure is hard caching when you have to manually figure out where to go.

1 – What did the route on the screen map look like?
2 – What did the turn-by-turn instructions say?
3 – What did the gps claim as your starting point? Was it a hundred miles away, where you last made a Route?

purple line did not start where i was. went out to nearest large road, then way north or south, then back near where we were
2 – What did the turn-by-turn instructions say?
pretty much the turn by turn would say go to hwy 1 then turn left or right at the cache, nothing in between
3 – What did the gps claim as your starting point? Was it a hundred miles away, where you last made a Route?
it was never where we were, but i don’t think it was at the last route. can’t be sure though
03/20/2006 at 6:13 pm #1741215It sounds like you are using the base map in the GPSr which includes the Interstates and some state highways and little else.
But you loaded the Florida maps. It is possible to force the GPSr to use the base map but you have to work to do it.
When I’m in an area that all I have is the base map I switch to ‘offroad’ and chase the needle at the same time trying to stay on the roads.
03/20/2006 at 9:02 pm #1741216It sounds like it was working off the base maps and not the detailed maps for the area.
03/21/2006 at 12:28 am #1741217argh. when i went to reload the wisconsin maps, i saw this tiny, tiny check box at the bottom of the screen, that asked if i wanted to load the routing capability for the map. i’m guessing i didn’t do this for florida and that’s where the trouble came in. it changed the file size for the wisconsin maps, so it must be loading something extra. probably all those turns that i needed. thanks for the help
