Hello, my name is Russ Whipple. I am half of the husband and wife team known as awhip80. We live in Appleton and have 5 children. One of those children is now off serving our country and the other 4 are still home and we serve them.
Our caching began back in 2015, when a coworker of my wife mentioned the game to her. Amanda looked into the geocaching website, created the profile and our first find was on May Day of 2015 at Alicia Park in Appleton (that cache has since been archived and we have a relatively new hide nearby). Like many newbie posts we see nowadays on our hides, our post was short and sweet; “Our first”. Our next adventure was a double date caching adventure in Plamann Park and this is when the sport really took hold of me as a worthwhile activity.
As a family, we love camping trips and many of the trips have focused on geocaching in those areas. What state parks can we visit? What cool features of the area can we enjoy? Where is caching going to take the family this weekend? As you can tell from our profile, building up huge numbers in the game is not our style. It is more about quality than quantity and the game has not disappointed.
My two favorite parts to the game are finding lonely caches and hiding caches for others to enjoy. If you watch the LCG at all, you know that I am regularly near the top of the scoreboard in the game within the game. These caches are usually very challenging in some shape or form and I am one that enjoys a great challenge. In August of 2016, I came up with an idea for a cache nearby to my home, but that idea was not accepted by the reviewers because of a mystery cache that was nearby. I had to solve a mystery cache, yuck! And, this is how I learned to appreciate a good mystery cache and gain a spot for my first hide. After finding the mystery cache, I contacted the CO to find out if it was at all possible to tweak his location at all in order to fit my cache in. He must’ve liked my idea enough to provide me with the room, because my fish is still hanging around to this day. And…I just revisited the cache that needed to move (which is currently on the LCG) last night.
All the children’s activities have been very important to me over the years. I have always been involved to a high degree in their activities. I have served as a coach in multiple youth sports and really enjoyed serving in BOD positions for the youth football, baseball and wrestling programs of our area. I also, currently, sit on the BOD for our two youngest charter school. I enjoy giving my time, in the hopes of making things better for the kids and families involved in these organizations.
Even though there is so much more I could say, I must cut this short now. The two Littles have a wrestling tournament that starts in an hour. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I will be at an event later this afternoon that will provide that first opportunity. The nominations are very much appreciated and I look forward to serving all of the Wisconsin caching community should I be elected to the WGA BOD. Thank you!
