Seeking geocacher hider for private event in door county

Hello,

I am having a wedding in Door county on Sept 23rd. As something to do while the week we are up there I would like to do a scavanger hunt which will include a geocache that the hunting party has to find. There are alot of details I would like to work out with you in directly via email. I need about 4-5 caches unburied, and of moderate difficulty and terrain. These are first timers so I don’t want it to be to hard to find but I’d like for them to do a little work. You’d need to hide it and subsequently take it away if it is unfound. I haven’t decided what to put in the box but am thinking along the lines of a geocoin or small knick knak which I will mail to you. I am prepared to negotiate some sort of compensation. And you would be allowed to keep the spoils. They will need to be scattered throughout the door county peninsula.

There are tons of great Geocaches placed throughout the Door County Peninsula already which could serve you quite nicely.

I suggest generating a list of the area caches and choosing a few favorites based on whatever criteria suits your purposes. Perform a Pocket Query for a hundred mile radius of the wedding location. You could limit your list to 1/1 or maybe 2/2 T/D at the high end and see what shows up. Then, go out and find those caches or ask other Door County cachers about them and select the top 5 of the bunch. Maybe this task could be sequestered, as you suggest, for compensation.

Then, simply drop a “Stamper” or a “Punch” available at most craft stores into each of the five for your wedding party to find and mark a score card that you create. A simple index card with boxes is sufficient. You decide the rules of play. You can also drop coins into those caches just prior to the weekend with specific instruction to leave in the cache for “so-and-so”. Not an absolute guarantee that they’ll be there, but likely they will.

This gives the first-times a genuine Wisconsin Geocaching experience instead of a watered-down, “we placed this series for the wedding party” experience.

Thank you for your suggestions but I’m afraid it won’t work in this circumstance. I don’t live anywhere near the area and I also have no contacts in the area. I ‘m afraid I won’t have time when I fly in to go and find caches as I will no doubt have tons of other more pressing wedding arrangements to manage. I also would like to have a cache that will be unused by other cachers as the item I put in there may or may not be of value (i haven’t decided yet). It has been my experience where I cache that the only items that remain are plastic trinkets, and cheap knick-knacks. My event isn’t solely a geocache event either. I only plan on giving each group one cache to find. Its going to be more of a scavenger hunt with answering local trivia questions and findingpurchasing local items the focus. Here is another suggestion Eric,
making contacts in your target area is really quite simple.
you could do a quick lookabout at the google maps for the caches centered in the Door County Penninsula and pick off a few cache owners names and fire them an email explaining what you wish to do and if they would either “sponsor” one of their own caches or recommend area caches that would fulfill your requirements and then see if they would be willing to (if the hide would support it) place a secondary container “for the Wedding Party only”. maybe a locked ammo can or an envelope in the container with coords for a nearby location to find the secondary container.

who would know better what the interesting caches are in an area than those who live in the area?

this way you could expand or retract the search area to whatever distance you wanted. there is alot of space out there and depending on how much time you set aside for this activity, you may not want the caches spread all the way from Gill’s Rock to Casco.

In other words, ask local cacher for help and maybe find some that will drop prizes for you

Sorry Seldom I meant no offense. I am new to the forum and was not aware I was able to directly contact cachers. This is by far the fastest and most direct way to accomplish what I am after. The way you worded your post I assumed “asking other door county cachers” meant contacting them through the forum which is what I am trying to do here. Labrat’s clearer explanation made me aware of a tool I didn’t know I had at my disposal. However in hindsight you both said similiar things. And your reply, although not initially helpful to me in the beginning, was still appreciated. Please don’t take offense.
