We had recently purchased an Explorist 210 for our friend and wondered if we should be able to send waypoints to the Explorist 210 receiver using GSAK. We already have subscribed to GSAK and use it for our Magellan Platinum. No problems with that. However, when trying to send Waypoints to the Explorist, we keep getting denied… can’t remember off hand what messages come up. We thought that maybe it’s not possible or that we are just not getting the right settings; the baud rate, com port, etc. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

When you go to send waypoints, you will need to change your GPS settings for a Magellan.

GPS>Setup>Brand (Magellan), and then adjust com port and port speed if needed.

Not real familiar with GSAK and Magellan, but I have uploaded coordinates to Magellans in this manner.

I have the 210 and I believe you have to go to one of the middle tabs (sorry don’t have GSAK installed on this ‘puter) and look for “export to eXplorist”. This will create a file for loading onto the GPSr.

You don’t actually connect up with GSAK. You just create a file that you would load into the eXplorist. Just transfer the file like you would any other when you plug the eXplorist into the USB it will show up as another “drive”.

The Explorist uses a slightly different approach that the other Magellan or even Garmin GPSr’s. You have to think of the Explorist as a file storage device because it is like you transfer the waypoints as a file. I hope this makes sense.

In GSAK, go to the toolbar on top to “file”, then to “export”, then to “Magellan Explorist and SD card”.

Still having some trouble. Understand the exporting thing, but the file that is suppose to be created during the exporting is stumping us. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the “file” should be SD card in the GPSr. If you have the GPS connected, it should show up as a drive. In the GSAK file section dialog box, select this as the path.

Jeremy can you help? I am trying to remember who had the Explorist 210 model at JanBoree so we can connect you to someone with the same model.

I believe it was Norskey (but the event was their first time downloading)… a couple other new folks also had 210s, but no one that frequents these forums that I remember. Though the procedure should be the same for anyone with a 300, 500, 600, or XL so maybe they can jump in here and help out.

During the export (GSAK File->Export->Magellan eXplorist and SD card), you need to find the Geocaches folder on virtual drive created when you plugged in the unit… it should have a drive letter above any of your hard drives like D: or E:. Enter a filename with a .gs extension like geocaches.gs and generate the file.

The waypoints for the geocaches you downloaded are in the file Internal MemoryGeocachesgeocaches.gs… to view or goto these waypoints, you need to “browse” to this file and open it just as if it were on a computer. The waypoints aren’t all in one flat list like on a Garmin unit. This is definitely a more flexible way to store waypoints, but it can be confusing to folks at first.

So to plot a course to a cache, hit the GOTO button, go to “Geocache Pts”, then find the geocaches.gs (or whatever you called it) file, hit enter, and you’ll get a list of the caches you downloaded. You can go to a particular cache in the list, hit enter, and then go to the compass screen to guide you to the cache.

Step 1: I think the first thing you need to do is find your Explorist box and sales receipt.

Step 2: Return and get refund.

        Step 3: Purchase a Garmin 😀

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. The Explorists have plagued me when trying to upload at our WGA events. They’ve been a real p.i.t.a. as far as uploads.

I think I have a pretty good idea on what to do now. I’ll be giving it a try in the near future. Thanks for all the help. I’ll let you know how it goes one way or the other.

I used a 210 before getting my 60CSx. There might be a more direct method but I used GSAK to export a GPX file and then used the Magellan Geocache Manager software that came with the 210 to open the GPX file. Click the Save button to save as a .geo file. From there you just connect the USB cable and click the Send to GPS button on the toolbar to load the waypoints. It places the waypoints in a folder with the same base name as the .geo file you saved under the Geocaching folder (I think as a .gs file). I think you could also export a .gs file directly from GSAK and then manually place the files to the appropriate folder on the GPS. It’s been awhile since I did it but I think that is right.
