I just spoke with a Sheboygan Press newspaper reporter who asked for background info on geocaching and the WGA. She is going on a geocache hunt with a Sheboygan geocacher and said they are going to hunt Kohler Kache. I suggested they may also want to look for Andre Outback — both are Yawningdog’s caches. The article is supposed to appear in next Wednesday’s edition. She said they do have an on-line versions of the newspaper so you may want to check it out. Maybe this will spur some new geocaching activity in Sheboygan County. We don’t seem to have many cachers there right now.

Sounds great! I look forward to reading the article.

This sparked a question for me, has anyone attempted to generate interest of our sport in local media? I know that http://www.channel3000.com has a submission address for story ideas. With how WGA is working with the DNR I wonder if it would be good to try to get some of the local news stations to cover the story. Or even local newspapers. I wouldn’t think that the DNR would dislike any GOOD media attention that may be brought to it from this, but I guess there is a chance. With all of the bad things happening with the DNR this could be a “little nugget of gold” to help the DNR look good in the publics eyes.

That and it may inform geocachers in Wisconsin of the WGA if they haven’t heard of it before (strange if that..), and get the aquanted with rules and regulations for our state. And of course hopefully generate more interest in Geocaching

I dunno, just some thoughts. I’d be willing to take some report along on a Geocache I’m thinking that The Artful Dodger by Artopsy http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=22619 would be a great first hunt as it worked to get us hooked into Geocaching

I have written to the TV program “Outdoor Wisconsin” to let them know about the cooperation going on between the DNR and the WGA, but so far I have not heard back from them.

Here’s a listing of some of the coverage we have received in Wisconsin that I know of. If anyone knows of others, please list them here. Maybe we can start a new WGA web page to list all our Wisconsin publicity.

Channel 4 News in Milwaukee did a story last year that featured members of Team CacheCows and Socko. I have a tape of it somewhere. If enough people want to see it, I could digitize it and email it to you. Unfortunately we can’t post the video at our website due the TV station’s policies.

A LaCrosse TV station featured ER-IN-WI last year, I think it was. Does anyone have a copy of that?

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel sent a reporter and photographer to our first geoaching picnic in August 2001. http://www.jsonline.com/news/metro/aug01/geo27082601a.asp

The Oshkosh Northwestern ran an article last year. I may have a copy around somewhere.

The Manitowac Herald Times Reporter featured Team Nelson last September: http://www.wisinfo.com/heraldtimes/news/archive/feature_5866326.shtml

Article in the Walworth County Week featuring Team CacheCows: http://www.wi-geocaching.com/cachecows/the_week.html

Article in Oconomowoc Focus featuring Team CacheCows: http://www.wi-geocaching.com/cachecows/oconomowoc_focus.html

Article in the Fall issue of IMPACT, the magazine of the Wisconsin Parks & Recreation Association: http://www.rocketink.com/WPRAarticlepage1.jpg and http://www.rocketink.com/WPRAarticlepage2.jpg

    Any others?

A bug (Leggs) was snatched from Kohler Cache by kookendapope on 2/27. I have been following that bug’s progress. According to the finder, a reporter and a photographer were along to record the story. It should appear in the 3/5 edition of the paper. I forwarded a picture of the bug to a BBC producer about a month ago, to be used in a TV story about caching. Leggs is a famous bug.

The Sheboygan Press story came out Wednesday. Upon first reading, it looks like the reporter did an accurate and thorough job with the story. Nice going, Tom and Cindy, for taking the reporter and photographer with you on a hunt. Here’s a link to the on-line version: http://www.wisinfo.com/sheboyganpress/news/archive/feat_9029398.shtml

Great article, but did they HAVE to decrypt my clue and then proceed to give away the location of the cache? Sheesh!

With great press like that, how can any entity be against geocaching?

Great article, it’s good to see some news coverage on this sport. As I read the article the name Tom Filz looked familiar, come to find out I work with Tom, so we had to laugh about it, then talked about caching. Way cool.

I just re-read the lead sentence… “Geocaching (pronounced “geo-cashing) is catching on in Wisconsin as one of the hottest and hippest outdoor activities.”

Hippest? Really? I’ll have to tell my teenage kids. Maybe then they would consider going geocaching with me.
