Why is GC.com the only website for placing caches?

I for one am happy there is only 1 place to go, I looked at letterboxing and all the sites and lost interest quickly because there were multiple sites.

It’s not. It’s just the only viable one, or at least the most popular. Terracaching is the second most I believe. Somewhere in the mix is Bob’s Big Bulletin Board o’ Caches (http://cachinbob.proboards.com/index.cgi). Beyond that I’m not sure.

There are really only two sites and they’re not that hard to manage. There’s also significant listing overlap. Really the only hassle is trying to log your finds to make searches easier–you have to log on both. Letterboxers (well, most anyway) aren’t as hung up on numbers as your average geocacher so it’s a non-issue. But it’s not for everyone.

Navicache.com is out there too, but has far fewer caches. We’ve dabbled with it but haven’t actually looked for any caches on the site. We’re pretty happy with Geocaching.com and aren’t looking to go elsewhere.

Big Bob must be stuck in the buffet line at the Cache Buffet. Nothing has been posted for awhile.

    Your thinking of Mouthman……

In a global free market economy (such as the internet), you can’t really ask the question “Should X have a competitor?” and expect a reasonable answer. The only thing stopping competitors is the cost of setting up a competing website and marketing it (effectively) along with the cost of developing the expertise to deal with GPS companies, phone companies, and wacky geocachers. Any entrepreneur is allowed to give it a shot if they desire. Unfortunately, the probability of success today is probably close to what it was in 2001 when the site was started. It is just that that probability is not very high. This is what is known as a natural monopoly, where no one chooses to try to compete with the big player. I somehow doubt that the FTC would be interested in pursuing a lawsuit against GS.com, but then again, with this current group, you never know. I suspect they are busy suing Intel, Microsoft, and Google.

I believe every service or product should have competition. It what inspires improvements.
I was asking more from the standpoint of “satisfaction”? If people had a reasonable alternative would they switch or use both? I have just noticed some unsatisfied users lately. I am fairly certain GC.com makes a good amount of money, but maybe it isn’t enough for a competitor to take a risk.

Look at what Google was able to do to Microsoft. Most of microsoft products are crap for what a person pays. That is why I will never purchase office again. Google Docs has replaced office.

I think GC.com is a great webite, but could there be something better. And the answer is yes. Technology can always be improved.

So when does your new caching site come online?

    😆

    I wish I had the skill. 🙂
