While I don’t like limiting our cache placement opportunites I agree and voted as such, ban them, way to dangerous.

To be fair to the owner of the new cache near the particular roundabout intersection referenced in my original post, their new cache is not inside of the intersection but is more of a roadside type cache near the roundabout.

However, it’s still a valid discussion and poll since there are a bunch that are indeed inside the “center circle”.

Thanks so far to those who have voted and responded. Keep em’ coming!

I voted “Yes”, they should be banned. Not as a cacher or pedestrian, but as a driver. There are enough places to look, and cars to watch, without having to wonder what that person with 2 little kids is doing in the roundabout! Are they watching ALL the cars and lanes as they scurry back across?
We enjoy the roundabout hides as cachers, but for the safety of everyone, especially cachers and there families, putting a hide in the middle of 2 streets (which is where you will find a roundabout) is risky.

If you should be 150 feet from a RR, which a train passes on occassionally, staying out of a roundabout makes even more sense!

      Just my 2 cents worth…

      Ditto! make that 4 cents!

      6 Cents!

      Make that 8 ❗

I am reminded of the game frogger when I picture a cacher trying to find his/her way to the center of the roundabout. I voted ‘no’ simply because I don’t like to be told I can’t do something because it is dangerous. I can decide for myself if it is too dangerous.

Sorry, I read “College Ave intersection” and immediately thought of my lonely cache that was in the College Ave Park and Ride lot in Milwaukee .. and read round about and thought .. wow, are they that far along on the construction?

Wew, nope, just checked and the College Ave bridge is still under construction .. and my coordinates would take you to the middle of the work zone ..

I have done geocaches in roundabouts .. not a good idea in most locations.. one was a lonely subdivision which was okay but the other a busy street .. I would vote that they are not a good idea.

There is no reason to “ban” them. They are stupid hides but safety is at the discretion of everyone caching. Unless the authorities ban it, why put a rule in place? The RR rule relates to cachers being illegally in the RR right of way I believe. The bridges rule relates to DOT rules I believe (and is frequently violated!).

All sorts of things you could “ban” just because they are stupid, lame, or just plain dangerous.

So then that leads to the question does anyone know for sure that being there is, for lack of a better term, legal? And can that be backed up with documents defining it one way or the other?

Not that it would be followed of course but…

I’m all for seeing natural selection in action but I also believe that there are some things we need to do to protect the borderline gene-pool swimmers and if a few lost green areas accomplishes this so be it.

I wouldn’t mind banning these. I have a hard enough time with roundabouts greater than one lane per direction going into them. Always trying to figure out where I’m supposed to be to go that way. If we end up with caches being hidden in these ares, I humbly apologize right now to those I hit and run over. It’s nothing personal, you just distracted me from trying not to be distracted from all of the other distractions. Somebody has to pay and unfortunately you are just a speed bump to me right now. Other than that, go for it and place them.

I find it interesting that though most who have spoken up on this thread feel they should be “banned,” or at the very least, are not a great place for a hide, the poll results show a definite leaning toward letting them go.

So can we hear from the other side of this discussion?

        #1914237

safety is at the discretion of everyone caching.

Yes but are you referring to the safety of the cacher or the safety of the general public? 2 totally different things.

I can put a cache at the top of a tall tree and generally the only one that can get injured is the person stupid enough to climb that tall tree.

I can put a cache in the middle of a roundabout and anyone who comes along to hunt it could unintentionally cause an accident in the intersection.

        There is a distinct difference.

I will comment more later. Carry on…

I’m not sure there is another side. I think the poll is skewed because of confusion between the thread title and the poll question. I’m guessing that some read the title and voted without rereading the question.

My apologies on that… wasn’t on purpose!

They are perfectly legal, even if they aren’t a good idea. As a reviewer, I do question people who place these sorts of caches. If they feel that folks hunting for a cache in a roundabout would not be a distraction to passing motorists, all I can do is publish the cache.

I have had people agree, after my questions, that they might not be a good thing and have archived or moved the cache.

Can I get one of our fine forum moderators to please update the subject of this thread to match the Poll question?

        Thanks much!
