We were in Marquette, MI this past weekend visiting our son and wife. 15″ overnight snows are the norm, but we agreed that there is no more snow up there right now than we have in Waupaca. Unusual winter for us and them.

02/28/2008 at 1:24 am #1885102Ray if you were out caching and didn’t leave the vehicle parked you wouldn’t have such an issue. 😆
TE02/28/2008 at 4:32 am #1885103I think Ray just took too long to find the cache!!!!!!!!!!!
Just kidding Ray!!!!!!
02/28/2008 at 5:44 am #1885104Since everyone seems to want to get out of town and the weekend looks good I’ll give you my caching conditions report for the Sussex area. We went 8 for 8 Saturday in Menomonee Falls and had little trouble walking around. We did need chipping and extraction tools for a couple of the finds. Ron Beatty has 7 new hides there. In Sussex/ Merton there is 5-6″ of snow on top of 2-3″ of hard packed snow/ice. The 1-3″ of new snow forecast for Thursday shouldn’t change things much with the warm forecast for the weekend. I hope this helps someone make some grabs in this area. If you look up my hides in the area the WF attributes were updated in January and are still good. I have about 20 findable hides under these conditions in the area. We were in Oconto County during the big snowstorm on the 17th and were only able to make 2 finds by snowmobile. I hid one up there on the 16th and it hasn’t been found yet so caching must still be limited up there. That’s what I know. If anyone could give the conditions right now in Appleton We would appreciate it. We’re heading up there on Sunday.
02/28/2008 at 12:58 pm #1885105Mr. Greenthumb, Thanks for the report! Hey, there’s an idea for a seasonal forum—-cache hunting conditions by regions! I suppose people could take it upon themselves to add such logs to a sticky in each regional forum. Sort of like—-“2/28-LaCrosse Area” subject lines, so that folks wanting to head that way could see what conditions are like. I’ll go do that right now for my area and invite others to do the same.

So I hope you left footprints….maybe I’ll follow them….

Weather reports haven’t been very accurate lately. I go more by what it looks like out the window when I wake up. Reports by active cachers are a better indicator of where to go to cache. We enjoy winter caching and “not winter friendly” isn’t in our vocabulary. I went 3 for 3 on dnfs yesterday and still had a nice hike on a sunny day. A dnf is a little easier to take when you’re searching in snow and a find is much more rewarding.
02/28/2008 at 2:02 pm #1885108Heck, we’ll cache in almost any conditions. DOC. wasn’t too far off with her so-called comment about the “photo” posted in the thread stealers thread that she alleged was us! If Trekkin’ remembers his secret weapon, we pretty much won’t stop until it’s found. Ask Spike about the one we nabbed a couple weeks ago, LOL.
We’re going to head over toward Necedah and Coloma anyway on Sunday. Hopefully some of the snow is down. I did tell Trekkin’ we can’t cheat on the Kayak Adventures over that way, the prospect of paddling to find those this spring has kept me going all winter!
02/29/2008 at 3:30 am #1885109Yup, we’ve been waiting on those “kayak adventures” for when we get the canoe out again.
Leave some footprints in the snow for us to follow in the area here when we can get out next week. (And it won’t look like that “photo” when we venture out!)
* * * * * * * But…it’s snowing here again now! * * * * * * *
02/29/2008 at 10:24 am #1885110Well so much for caching again…it snows pretty much every Friday around here. Got another 3 inches last night.

It snowed in Eau Claire last night as well. Snow depth is about 12 inches of old snow, 2 of new.

03/17/2008 at 4:47 pm #1885112As the snow melts, I am interested in how deep the snow is, to plan where to go next weekend…..
Snow is not much of a factor in the LaCrosse area anymore, mostly 0-2 inches. (though it did cost me at least one find)
Eau Claire still has 3 – 12 inches depending on where you are.
Hudson is over half bare now, as is the Twin Cities.

03/17/2008 at 6:53 pm #1885113lagrac and I were in the Baraboo area, where dependent on the slope and tree cover, there could be anywhere from just patches to ankle-calf deep snow. From there, we were in Watertown, where it was largely bare but soggy in the lowlying areas.
What’s it like way north? We’re taking a circuitous route up to visit the “in-laws” this week and hopefully finish up that corner of delorme pages. One snowshoe trek is in our sights, too.
03/18/2008 at 1:50 am #1885114Over 2 feet on the ground by us yet…
