Boy some people really need to get a life. It’s funny to watch people get bent out of shape and accuse others as logging “fakes” and “lies”.
I drove 8 hours round trip, and about 400 miles, spent about $70 in gas to hide 6 “fake” caches. Did the same thing 2 weeks later to find about 10 “fake” caches. Geez, I could have saved myself a lot of time and money if I knew we only had to “lie”
I guess at this point I fall into the, I do not log temp caches. That said, “I don’t care if you log the temp caches.” I don’t understand why it bothers so many folks.
Live and let live.
If person “X” logs a temp cache is that going to affect our grocery bill?

(Sorry, don’t know how to do the link thing, and Marc, you don’t have to make fun of me either).So, we originally logged “found it.” And then geocaching.com changed it to “attended.”
I wish they could do the same for the CITO events. Meaning you log once you attended, and then log “found it” for the temp. event caches.
What does everyone else think?

Done! I had to bite my tounge to not trash this dude in the comments section. I just stated that this was not a constructive use of the bookmark function.
I just had a CITO event (GCV78R) with no temp hides and had quite a turn out for my rural area.. no one gripped about not having temp hides to find.. and those that worry about getting caches could hunt the normal caches that are in the area and the drive to and from the event.
Also, I’m planning a hike/CITO thing for my 4th year Annv. at “Lone Rock” on the 28th.. I didn’t deem it necessary to make a new cache CITO event page or to lure others there with temp hides.. the cache location alone is the “bonus” and cleaning while walking with geo-friends for 5.5 miles means more to me than logging 20+ smilies..
We mentor through our actions.. and if Wisconsin’s temp event hide logs causes strife why paint our state a dark ‘grey’. Our state now has enough geocaches that any location would offer up many already posted/approved geocaches for those wishing to go to events to gain more insite about the area through finding caches.
I went to a Chicago event years ago that was only counted as “one find” but the approver had just approved about 20 “area” (within 15 miles of the event) hides within days of the event so it really was fun to see all the locations that geocachers were hoping to point out.. plus with those being ‘normal’ hides gives others unable to attend the event a chance to adventure there as well. To me, it just seemed a great way to coord the event with the release of new GC#####’s that show off the area for the visitors.
The last campout (year ago) I dragged my boyfriend through the night hunts.. had a blast but I’d not mind doing it just for kicks…
Our state parks work so well with us now that making a few normal caches within the park prior to WGA events might be the way to go.. so what if there are only a few to find. But others after the event then would enjoy the same location that the hiders wished to show off.
I remember when I was in charge of the temp hides at Devil’s Lake… the rest of the board thought me daffy (smiles) because of my excitement and odd thinking that “they” won’t come without geocaches massed in the area… there are now plenty of geocaches in most areas of our state that temp hides won’t be missed as much.. would love to see more social events without the ‘lure’ of massing ‘smilies’.. The trip there and back could gain enough finds for those wishing to add to their find totals.
Back years ago when geocaches were far and few between.. temp event caches made sense to me… but perhaps with gas prices on the ups.. people coming to events really want to come to enjoy the social or to clean a park etc as their way of giving back to the sport.
Just my thoughts..

Ugh. This argument is getting tiresome. I think I started ignoring it the day someone accused me of padding my numbers because I logged an “attended” at my own event. Apparently he didn’t like that I got credit for both a hide and a find on the same cache…

While we still hunt temps on occasion, and log them eventually if we do…at our own events we don’t hide them anymore. We agree that once in a while it’s nice to simply socialize with fellow cachers. We didn’t even let anyone drop bugs in if they weren’t leaving them w/ someone else to take away from the event.
We went to the campout and did two things: Bob went on the power caching run with Tony, Dave, Duane and Mike, while I took a more low key approach to the day…I walked only a few with Rhonda, Andrew, Tim, Carole, Mara and Justin. We also had an escort…Jeff.
We spent a lot of time talking to people and playing around home base. I didn’t miss the “run” and Bob was too pooped to appreciate it. So…we vote for the social aspect. (Did I make a point here or is my brain still frozen from being at Wrigley Field all day?)

I spend more time now answering the hundreds of emails I receive weekly.. as well as working with Rangers and promoting the sport.. if it wasn’t for their helps and allowing geocaching.. we’d only have drive ups or mini parks and we’d be missing out why State parks/lands were created.. they are created around some of the best AREAS in Wisconsin.. those special spots are where most geocaching “Memories” happen..
What does it take to carry a bit of adding machine tape, duct tape and a few baggies in your pocket.. or have a few micros on hand to snug in temp to save a geocache? It’s not the “log” that geocache placers wished you to find.. but to experience the Area. I keep telling those that help me out.. that I’d rather there were two containers there, if others think it’s missing (til I could get there to find/fix it) than to have the memory of the adventure RUINED cus they couldn’t find a goofy container.. sometimes my hiding techique was a bit too tough for new players.. so I’d rather it be replaced by someone helping it out than to see anyone’s adventure tainted..
