OK, the WGA Board has selected a date of September 13th for the picnic. But now the Picnic Committee needs to finalize a location for the event and could use your input.

Some of the locations that have already been mentioned or considered by the Picnic Committee:

    – Lapham Peak SP
    – Kohler-Andrae SP
    – Bong Rec. Area (aka Tickville)
    – High Cliff SP (possible 2009 campout location?)
    – Point Beach State Forest
    – Pike Lake SP
    – Roche-A-Cri SP

(Anticipating complaints… yes these are heavily skewed towards the eastern 1/3rd of the state, but if you have suggestions for places in central or NW Wisconsin we’d love to hear them.)

Are there any other places that people feel would work well for the picnic? Specifically, we’d like a place with enough land to hide a decent number of temporary caches. Probably not 55 like at the campout :), but maybe 25 to 30. It also has to have a large picnic area, with a large or better yet, enclosed shelter, big grill or grills, and parking for 200 to 250 people (100 cars). Also, it should probably not be in the SW corner of the state, since that is where the 2007 Geo-Picnic and 2008 Geo-Campout were held.

Note if you are really adamant about having the picnic at a certain location, maybe you should join the Picnic Committee and participate in making this (and other) decisions? 🙂 We welcome anyone who wants to help and feels they can contribute something to the planning of the event or the execution the day of the event.

My only concern is that a location decision would be made soon. For any geocachers that are also campers it affects our camping reservation plans. We have to make a reservation soon for any September weekends. I wouldn’t want to make a reservation for say 9/20 at High Cliff and then find out the picnic is also there the weekend before. My personal choice would be either Kohler Andrae or Point Beach. They are both located near many permanent caches and would make sense geographically for attendance. Pike Lake and Lapham Peak are both very busy in September and even though I can get to either one in 20 minutes I would rather travel a little. We have decided that we’re going to move around this summer to do our geocaching despite the high gas prices.

What about Hartman Creek near Waupaca? I also agree that a decision needs to be made soon for those who want to camp for the weekend.

I may have been mistaken…but I thought I read a while ago that the Board decided on the weekend after Labor Day…

I sure like the High Cliff idea……but I agree it would work better for the 2009 camp-out. As long as one of the two is there, I’ll be happy.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

It was not on the list because we were at Hartman Creek for the 2004 and 2007 Geo-Campouts. It is a great park but we don’t want to go there too often (though the park officials are really enthusiastic about geocaching and would probably welcome us back in a heartbeat).

To the best of my knowledge, the only thing announced was that we were going with the second Saturday following Labor Day, which is September 13th this year. Note that we are going to try to hit that date, but if we pick a park where that is simply impossible due to issues (i.e. can’t get a shelter) it still could change.

I personally love Lapham Peak – camping could be nearby, but not exactly there.

I wouldn’t mind seeing it at the Kettle Moraine’s northern unit. They have 27,500 acres and camp grounds, lakes and a lot of glacial features. I remain open to other areas as well. I just don’t want to drive 8 hours round trip.

Yep, good idea. We have had an event at Lake Wissota State Park, which is just north of Eau Claire, and it may be reasonable to return there at some point.

I agree that Hartman is the perfect place, due to location, services available and the great scenery. I am sure we will return there, but perhaps not so soon.

I agree. It looks like High Cliff would be a good option, and the only reason not to choose it would be to choose it as a location for the spring campout.

I agree that would be a great spot. It is very scenic, very large, and has a lot of great trails. The issue would be is that the DNR lists their shelters there as being only large enough for 50 people. Is there anyone here more familiar with what their shelters look like and know if they would work? Anyone local to that area willing to recon the shelters to see if they would work?

Thanks for sharing. Pluses for Lapham is proximity to population center, large park, scenic terrain, and a shelter that is big enough to meet our needs. The big minus that I have to point out that it is pretty far south in the state, especially following an event that was also quite far south in the state.

The WGA Picnic was at the KM Northern Unit (Greenbush) in 2005, so it does work. However, it isn’t easy to get to from west or northwest. Many two-lane roads (while very pleasant to drive on) greatly add to the travel time. I realize that the picnic will be held south of me, but it would be nice if it was in a more directly accessible location.

Devil’s Lake is a place we haven’t been to for awhile.
