I would cast my lot for Hartman creek. The DNR there loves us and I don’t feel we would wear out our welcome by visiting there annually or even semi-annually. As long as we behave properly, we should be as welcome as any other repeat visitor. We also need to consider the fact that we enhance their mission with our CITO and garlic mustard pulling. I can’t think that we would wear out our welcome. ~tb

Any possibility of someone posting a state picture with these parks marked?? That may help some of us determine just how far is too far.

Personally, Hartman Creek would be great. 20 mile round trip 😀
I like the High Cliff idea too, but also agree that it may be a better venue for the 2009 Campout.

Are there any City parks that may be considered?

Disclaimer : Always answering to a higher power.

I think “Kohler Andrae” would be a great location …

      … lots of parking
… the park ranger is very pro-geocaching
      … just a short hop off I-43
… lots of caches in the general area
      … many motel possibilities
… the northern section (Black River area) boast a cache in tribute the first cache in Wisconsin, originally at the same location.

IF you should happen to go with it, contact the ranger in advance regarding temp hides. There’s many places that are great, but some “sensitive zones” where they don’t want you off trail (mainly the dunes along the “cordwalk”) … not that I giant pile of sand with endangered weeds is the best place for a cache any way.

Of the parks listed in Jeremy’s first post, I “vote” for Roche-A-Cri”. The view from the top of the mound is great and it is a very nice park that we could never use for a campout. With 5 miles of trails there is enough space to put a decent number of temps without it being too labor intensive to retrieve them at the end of the day.

        Miles to Friendship from:
        Milwaukee – 153
        Madison – 88
        Colfax – 145
        Green Bay – 123
        Stevens Point – 58

However, there are no reserveable campsites for that weekend, just walk-ups.

I’m quite fond of Roche a Cri myself.

About five hours round trip. I can accept that. Looks like an interesting area. I can knock off a few counties and DeLorme pages too. I better start saving gas money now.

Not gonna happen in this lifetime.nope,no way no how cuz as I’ve been told majority rules. Always has always will.

But since you asked for suggestions
Amnicon Falls State Park, Patterson State Park, Copper Falls State Park…I could list more but what’s the point?

I think as north as possible there are parks north the middle of the state and most of us up here do walk upright

        My general feelings are this….

The campout is for the travelers. People are willing to travel much further because they can spend the night. For the campout, distance isn’t a major consideration.

The picnic is for the masses. It should be held near higher population areas to accomodate the most amount of people. People are not as willing to travel several hours, attend the event, then drive several hours back.

Last year we had the picnic in the Western part of the state.

I’d like to see us revisit Lapham Peak! We would have a HUGE turnout.

Just because the picnic is a one day event does not mean everyone has to drive home that night. There is no reason why one could not camp overnight and leave the next day. The location chosen will never make everyone happy, but to say that the picnic should always be near the masses is not right in our opinion. We would like to see the events in new locations as much as possible

has there ever been any thought as to having more than one picnic so that more people could go to one

Is that so? So when was the last camp out held that was 6-7 hrs from Madison or Milwaukee. Admit it. A WGA event will never be held in the Northwest part of the state as in Superior/ Hurley areas. The farthest North it will ever be the Eau Claire region. Heck! I’d be happy id it was over in the St. Croix Falls. There is a big park there along the river.( If there has been a WGA event there, then my bad)

Every-time this discussion comes up,there more and more reason that a UP North Wisconsin Geocascher Association should be made.
Those of us who live north of Eau Claire can gripe till we are blue in the face cuz it will never change. And don’t say that’s what elections are for, cuz what is it…75-80% are from the SE part of the state. You want more people involvement from the north, hold an event up here! Cuz there are a bunch of us rednecks from the sticks the geocache and the majority of them have never heard of the WGA.
