The problem is folks, we get very little help when organizing the events. It is the same core group of people that drive across the state to hide temps and scout parks. We need LOCAL help.

I would love to have the campout in St Croix. We would need about 20 LOCAL volunteers to make it possible. We ask for locals, and we only get 1 or 2. We appreciate the help, but we need much more help then that.

I simply cannot support an event on the other part of the state, when chances are, we will have the same handful of people helping out from the opposite end.

There is a theme here folks..

How do you know if you don’t ask!?!? A first time event up here could have people lining up to help. So you mentioned the Masses…..Are the Masses helping set up? Don’t sound like it. If I were to hold a picnic up here, would I get any help from down south? Same answer for an event in the south. What if you were in my shoes. how would you feel then.

You will have no idea what kind of response you will get if you don’t ask or say where are going to have an event “here”. Where ever here might be.

So ya want local help, but the locals are not part of the WGA, how do you get them to become a member? Maybe have a membership deive at the event!

So Brian, you have made it clear that there you will never support an event in North part of the state. Is that correct?

When have you asked for help in the St. Croix area? When have you asked for help in the Superior or Hurley areas?

    What a bunch horse pucky……

What away to represent the whole state. Maybe all the people north of HWY 29 should have the title of friend of the WGA ( or probably in my case. enemy combatant.)

No, that is incorrect. In fact, I hosted the first event in Northern Wisconsin.

Time after time we ask for help. We get the same results time after time. We get the same core group of helpers time after time. I would love to be proven wrong here, but it hasn’t happened yet. It seems like people are all gung ho to have an event in their neck of the woods, but when we ask for help, we get very little help. Then come the emails, I would like to help but this came up, or that happened. The same group of folks show up to help. Prove me wrong, PLEASE.

I would love to have the next campout in the Northern part of the state. Start lining up the help and show the WGA that there is enough help…. Help that will be there to actually help out.

Back on topic of the picnic. I think it should be held in an area closer to the majority of the members. While a few may spend the night, I think the majority will only come for the day.

Hayward, I think your idea of a UPWisconsinGA is great, but heck with that, how about just joining in with the UP chapter of MiGO, Me and Val are all ready members of MiGO and they have welcomed us with open arms, MiGO is more like a family, This is why we have not attended many events in Wisconsin. All the bickering and fighting, and worrying about the numbers and the temps. Hell with all that, Maybe next time my membership comes due to WGA Ill just let it lapse. Its not the drive time for us, its not that we are well off or anything, we are not, by any means. We go to events to meet people, laugh, have fun. This is why we are driving 10 hours to lower Michigan this weekend for the Lazy Hayes Days II event, GC1A092

Anyone who want to go to a event to just relax for the weekend come on over.

Other events we have coming up in the UP of Michigan Are:

    Fall Fun Day 2008 GC1C3T8 9/20/200 6th annual event
Presque Isle Park Event III GC1CQG0 8/23/2008

It still might be a bit of a drive, but once you attend a event in Michigan, you will realize how much more of a family this sports members are.

I hear that Roche-A-Cri is a nice park. I haven’t been there yet.

I believe they are also very pro-geocaching there.

Yes, this is a good idea, one that I hope that we can pursue.

    Cheezehead,

I find it difficult to follow your argument. Since you began geocaching in 2004, the WGA held a Campout in Lake Wisota State Park and at Peninsula State Park, both are north of Highway 29 and you did not volunteer or participate in either one. Lake Wisota is barely 100 miles from Hayward. Yet, you say that we need to bring WGA sponsored events north of Hy 29 so that you can participate. Both of these events were well attended by geocachers from SE Wisconsin, 300 miles away. Since 2004 we have also held 2 events at Hartman Creek, about as far from Eau Clair as it is from Milwaukee.

One object of holding WGA sponsored events at one location or another is to inconvience as few of our members as we can.

BTW Your WGA membership is free because operating costs are paid from the donations of those who do attend these events. We want to keep attendance as high as we can for the financial health of the WGA.

If a WGA picnic or campout is held in Superior or Beloit, Trudy & I will be there. We will support the decision of the WGA for any location that is selected. And we would expect a similar effort from all that wish to see this organization prosper.

I did not start geocaching until July 2, 2006, so sorry, I couldn’t help at the 2004 event. Ok, I have 2o people that will help with and event. I’. jumping up and down waving my hand to get the BOD attention that maybe an event could be help up here. If the picnic /campout was held in Eau Claire I would be there to do whatever need to be done.

1st question, how many locals helped set up the latest camping event? Where there 20?
2nd question. How many BOD’s have to be in attendance for it to be a WGA event.
3rd question, why wasn’t a news letter/email sent out asking where the event should be held cuz its for the “member” but half of the WGA members are never here, so what good does it do to ask here.
4th question, how many more geocachers are there in the state than there was in 2004? I know of 10 just in the Hayward area.

How do you get more people from the sticks to join the WGA, Have an event. I meet someone last week that’s been caching for 4 years and never heard of the WGA.

Why even go through the motion of asking where an event is going to be held? The BOD of the South East are going to make sure are going to vote to have it where they want anyways.

The WGA is suppose to represent all of Wisconsin, but it hardly does if at all. And no, it’s not sour grapes over not getting elected to the BOD. I was surprised I got 30 votes

You want dues, I’ll pay an annual dues if that’s what it takes to get something north of Eau Claire. Eau Claire is still a 2 hr drive from Hayward. Heck I’d drive the 3 hrs to Rhinelander or Eagle River to an outing. I’m not asking for an event to be in Hayward but somewhere in Northern Wisconsin(and Sorry Eau Claire is not northern Wi.) but for the other who have an extra hour to an hour and a half drive that live north of me. At $4 a gallon ,I would think that everyone would think twice
going anywhere more than 30 miles from there home

So lets say that I’m going to throw a picnic here in Hayward near the end of August. What do I have to do to make it a WGA picnic. I might get Zuma up here. So is it now a WGA event cuz I have a BOD in attendance?
You can bash me all you want now because it doesn’t matter, cuz this will probably be my last time to this board cuz it doesn’t concern me anymore. I just hope it snows.

I hope that you’re not representative of any of the other geocachers in your area because if you are (and I’m sure you’re not) you’re attitude surely wouldn’t encourage anyone to drive to attend an event there. You’re criticism of the WGA board members is totally unjust. They all devoted nearly the entire weekend to making the campout a huge success and spent very little time being able to get out in the park to hike or geocache. I was the first non board member up in our camp area each morning and the board members were already up and off to work. If anything comes out of your senseless rants I hope it is that it encourages the membership at large to get involved helping with the WGA events.

I’m Sorry but all this bickering is very disappointing. I sorry but any new members logging onto the WGA forums for the first time and they see this makes it look like we are all doing this as a carrier and this is life and death and not for fun.i do this for fun only it is not a must thing for me i like to do it and its fun but when you read all this bickering back and forth it make me want to quit. i know the first hing people are going to say is i don’t get out as much as everyone else but I have a Job that prohibits me from doing more. I say this because a friend of mine logged in one day to read some posts to see what we all talk about and he couldn’t believe all the fighting on some of the forums. cant we all just get along and do this for fun. Maybe we should hold 2 events one in the SE and one up north only if there is enough people to help out with setting it up and running it. but that’s my 2-cents worth take it or leave it but remember this is supposed to be a fun hobby to get us outdoors and enjoy mother nature.

Hey there Hayward Cheezehead, Ol buddy,

Let me answer some of your questions, and thank you for bringing to the fore that we need as an Association need to represent the entire state, not just the state of Milwaukee and area.

I realize that you were not cachin when we had the event at Lake Wissota. Heck, I had just started myself, and that event was a long time ago, so we are about due for something a lil further north. Whether that happens or not, remains to be seen, but whereever we choose, some folks are going to be happier than other folks. One option might be to have a regional event, but that also remains to be seen.

Question 1. How many locals helped at the last event? Exactly 2, as far as I know: LMcGisme and Hotdogs off trail. I am guessing we could get more than 2 volunteers in Hayward. One of the things that makes High Cliff, Lapham, or Rib Mountain attractive possibilities is that at each of those we would likely benefit from local help.

Question 2: How many BODs have to be present? There is no rule or precedent on this. Generally 7 to 9 of the 9 BOD members have attended the last several events, but there is no rule on this.

Question 3: Why wasnt an email sent out? Dont know. Generally, we have not in the past queried members in the forums for suggestions on event locations, mostly because it can end up being a self-serving free-for-all. It may be helpful though to hear what folks think, and I have read everyone’s comments with interest.

Question 4: How many more cachers? The number of cachers is growing exponentially, and you are right, there are a lot more people caching now than there were in 2004. In the past, 2 annual events met the WGA goals and met our needs. With the growth in numbers of cachers, and increased fuel prices, it may be reasonable to expand our number of events, and hold a few regional events. However, if we do, we would certainly need the support of members, because 9 people cannot realistically be expected to put on more than 2 events a year, without assistance from the general membership.

Anyway, I hope that answers your questions. I do think that where ever the event is held, some folks are gonna have to drive more than others. That is just kind of the way it is. I also think that we will try to move it around the state as much as possible. The last 2 events were in SW Wisconsin, so I would expect that we would be going a different direction this time.

    Hi,

Could not agree more. Let’s keep it as friendly as light as possible. Of course, it is not to be unexpected that folks are gonna have different opinions on this, and on other subjects. I think where we need to disagree, it is OK to disagree, but to do it in as agreeable fashion as possible.

    Thanks a lot.

I agree with you Zuma. This is supposed to be fun so lets have fun. with gas prices being the way they are we might have to hold different events because some might not want to drive all over the state for just a day. again my 2 cents. i mean no disrespect I think all BOD members should be given a big Thank you they all work at doing stuff on there own on there time away from family and friends and there is all ways going to be someone not happy cant please everyone.
