Anywhere but Bong in September.
Bong would be a great location for a WGA Picnic, but September is the height of tick season there.
Maybe in a future year we could plan a picninc there, but in Late July early August when the Ticks are mostly dormant. (probably just avoiding the heat) 🙂

Hi,
Thanks for the info. Also, I would like to avoid the extreme edges of the state so that we can serve as many WGA members as possible. For example, Amnicon is a great place, but it is as extremely Northwest as Bong is extremely Southeast.
Bong might be a good place for a regional event, just like Amnicon might be.

06/03/2008 at 12:15 am #1889771As you all know by now, Val and I are big into geocaching in Michigan.
This is how Michigan Does there events The hold 3 per year. Spring camp out, Fall Fun Day and Winter Social.
There are 4 chapters in MiGO UP, Northern Lakes SW and SE
The camp out and Fall Fun day rotate thru the 4 chapters, so that every 2 years there is a event held in that area for sure
The winter social is usually held either in the SW or SE, just for logistics(Traveling in Winter in Northern Michigan is not the easiest), it is the largest gathering of the 3, the annual meeting is held at this event.
How about dividing the state up into chapters, In MiGO each chapter has a president and they sit on the BOD. We also have an Executive Committee (Treasurer, Sec, Pres and Vice of the entire org)
I could go alot deeper into this but you get the point I hope.
Maybe WGA should look into something like this having chapters or regions to help spread out the BOD and get more involvement locally.
Its getting to the point that we too are going to leave the WGA along with Hayward Cheesehead

06/03/2008 at 12:38 am #1889772OK, I lied, I am lurking in the background. But as much as some would like me to leave, I will always support the WGA organization and will try to make it the best organization it can be. I never said I was gonna leave. I just said I was going to leave this board as in this thread.
But you never know what could pop up some day.
06/03/2008 at 1:14 am #1889773As posted earlier, Peninsula State Park is Technically north of Hwy 29, but come on now you are grasping at straws to fight to keep your events south by using this as an example, where we live in Mountain, Peninsula state park is only about 65 -70 miles away as the crow flies, but ANYONE who knows what our state looks like knows that if you live north of Hwy 29 you would have to go thru Green Bay to get there, that makes the trip now 140 miles to get there, Or i guess we could swim from Marinette and make the trip shorter.
06/03/2008 at 1:50 am #1889774I have never seen a clear description of the committee authority, so I’m not sure about this, but I thought with the committee structure for events that the location was now determined by the committee. If the committee were to be dominated by people north of Hwy 29, perhaps the event would be held there.
I’d appreciate clarification from the BOD on this because committee authority is something I’m unsure about.
Perhaps this is a way of both getting the events further north and getting the northern geocachers more involved in the WGA.
06/03/2008 at 2:33 am #1889775I really like the idea of Lapham Peak. I know it was used way back in the day but it is a great park with plenty of trails…plus it’s like 10 minutes from me 😛
(Could someone send me a link to the Michigan main boards I want to post my condolences for a fallen friend; with so many chapters I was confused where to go to post)

Personally, Hartman Creek would be great. 20 mile round trip 😀
Personally, Roche-a-Cri would be great. 5 mile round trip 😀
However, I think RAC might be too small. I don’t think there are 100 parking spots in the whole park, much less at the shelter area. And the shelter is not enclosed, and won’t hold the number of people anticipated.

However, there are no reserveable campsites for that weekend, just walk-ups.
The outer camping loop is usually closed after Labor Day, but the other 25 sites should be mostly available, just not reservable after Labor Day. Very few campers in the fall, unless there’s something going on that weekend that I am unaware of. The sites are all primitive except for the handicapped one.
Roche-a-Cri is about 30 miles north of the Dells, though, for anyone wanting a camping experience “on the quieter side of the Dells” this summer, and there are lots of geocaches to find in any direction from the park, as well as some in the park with more to come.
06/03/2008 at 4:08 am #1889778As far as the “Civil War” discussion, I guess we’re on the Mason-Dixon line here in central Wisconsin, and we can appreciate the pros and cons that both sides have brought up.
Being new to geocaching and the WGA, the only event held since we’ve been active was the campout, and we had other commitments that weekend. There will always be people who can’t attend an event for one reason or another, and distance is a major one.
We think we can attend the picnic, however, (the date is OK) and if it involves a lot of driving for us, we might find a place to stay overnight and plan other activities in that area or to and from the picnic. We missed the chance to see other geocachers at the campout, and we are hoping to meet all of you at the picnic, if not on the trails.
One request–NO TICKS! (Right now, a winter picnic sounds like a good idea–how soon we forget all that snow!)
06/03/2008 at 2:31 pm #1889779Are we any closer to deciding the location?

Coming from the SE (Kenosha) we’d also have to go through Green Bay. And it’s 175 miles. 😀

Yes. I made a number of phone calls today, to check availability. So progress is being made, but nothing to report at this point.
If anyone has a phone number for Lapham Peak, please email it to me. I found 2 numbers, but neither worked. There main line has a “mailbox full” message.
We remain open to suggestions. Just remember that we need a site with a fairly large shelter for the picnic and a park that is reasonably large.
Thanks,
zuma
06/03/2008 at 8:04 pm #1889782Is there any reason the picnic cannot be held on at a County park? This would give us more options to centrally located locations.

more options to centrally located locations. No reason at all. In the past, events have always been at state parks, and that is the prejudice of many to continue. However, if you know of a great county park, large in size, with a large shelter, please free to suggest it. A 300 acre park would be too small, and the shelter should accomadate at least 100 people, preferably more.
