In the past I have suggested Camp Erin (owned by my employer, Quad/Graphics) as a possible campout location. This is a private park in the Holy Hill area northwest of Milwaukee. Some of us who were on the WGA board a few years ago met there to scout it for the campout , but it was not selected for the campout because, as I recall, some board members didn’t like the condition of the privvies near the campsites. However, it might make a good picnic location. It’s 325 mostly wooded acres and has a very nice modern lodge building with full kitchen, bathrooms, etc. There is also a volleyball court, horseshoes, fishing pond. I checked the schedule and it’s not available on Sept. 13, but it is available on Sunday Sept. 14. I know some of our leaders favor a Saturday picnic, but if there’s any flexibility with that, Camp Erin might work. I’m just offering it as an option if other locations are not panning out.

    Thanks Ken.

Rather than moving to a Sunday, we would more likely bump it up a week or back a week. Folks who travel like to make the events a weekend, and Saturdays probably work a bit better for that.

The preferred date is 9/13. It may be necessary to bump it to to 9/6 or 9/20 so if you wanna check those dates, that would be helpful.

    Ralph,
Unfortunately I’m not available the previous or following weekend, so that wouldn’t work.

I have never seen a clear description of the committee authority, so I’m not sure about this, but I thought with the committee structure for events that the location was now determined by the committee. If the committee were to be dominated by people north of Hwy 29, perhaps the event would be held there.

I’d appreciate clarification from the BOD on this because committee authority is something I’m unsure about.

Perhaps this is a way of both getting the events further north and getting the northern geocachers more involved in the WGA.

Yes, the committee does determine where the event will be held. We solicited for non-board WGA members to join it in our last newsletter, but nobody responded to that. I have now put out a thread in the announcements as well. Here’s the link:

So anybody who wants to be directly involved can post there or PM me. Of course, signing up means you are committing to more than just helping choose a location. 🙂

Rib mountain appears geographically closest to center……..that one or point beach I would be able to help out with……….BantamC mentioned that he went to a couple of these events (never let me know he was goin’, the old so-and-so)…..I’m just hoping it’s close enough for me to get to in September

    Hi,

    Thanks for sharing your opinion.

I agree Rib Mtn would have been a good choice, due to it’s central location. I did check into it already, in fact it was one of the first that I looked into. However, the shelter at Rib Mountain is going to be torn down this summer, so there are not adequate facilities at Rib Mountain for the picnic. Sorry.

As to Point Beach, someone else suggested it as well, so I already checked it out also. Point Beach has several strikes against it: The shelter there accomadates only 50 people, there are very few existing caches in Point Beach which makes me wonder how cache-friendly the park staff and terrain is, and third because it is on the peripheral edge of the state, it would be a longer drive for more people than other available options.

okey dokey, then I won’t be able to help out before hand, but once the location is decided upon I will probably offer services for the day of, if needed

what about some where near Eau Claire that is Central to most of the state and there are lots of great parks in the area like Carson park just my ideas

Yep, good idea. We have had an event at Lake Wissota State Park, which is just north of Eau Claire, and it may be reasonable to return there at some point.

OK, not trying to start any fights here. What about Lake Wissota? If it’s been 4 years, why not?

Flambeau River State Forest- Even thou this would be a great spot, there are very few caches in this area….I believe.

Great spot to visit and to cache in. (Wish it had a few more like Slough Gundy, one of my all-time favorites.)

But as far as I know there is no shelter or facilities. Am I wrong about that?

I agree that Lake Wissota would be a great spot, and am hopeful that we can get an event there in 2009. I dont think that is going to happen for this fall, but we may be able to do some kind of regional WGA event in the general area, yet this year. Stay posted, and thanks for your patience.

One of my favorite areas too! Just finally conquered Slough Gundy a week or so ago!
