Knowing many cachers are also birders, I was hoping someone may have some insight on this-

Today I was out on Delevan Lake and came across a lone young Common Loon. As pleasant as it was to observe the loon caching fish, I have to wonder if it wasn’t a sign of a problem. I have never heard of loons in this part of the state. I have to wonder if it was in the middle of migration or if there is another reason for it’s presence?

While I have no insight, it is probably from the same reason that we see cranes in Waukesha country where not that many years ago you’d never see one south of highway 64. Family has had places on lakes near Lake Tomahawk since the 40’s. Now there is more peace and quiet home in the city of Waukesha! So, even the wildlife is leaving the not so serene northwoods.

I work on Oconomowoc Lake in S.E. Wis. There is at least one loon that stays on the lake. It still surprises me when I see it.

In the case of the Loon, it’s a problem caused by a specific variety of ticks, that are attacking the Loons, specifically the “A” strain of ticks, that only feeds on this type of bird. I will look up the technical term for these ticks and get back to you ….

    … “Loon A Ticks”

ahhh — but there is a simple cure for the “A” tick.
If you play one certain song loudly enough near the bird, the ticks will depart. It’s the “E” song. I’m sure you know the one…

Did a little research on this — found a Wisconsin DNR report from April 8, 2003. It indicated that several Loons are making temporary homes on Delavan Lake. Perhaps you saw one of its Loon “squatters”.

Loons are great birds! And speaking some more about birds, I got to get pretty close to a bald eagle this weekend while I was up north. Excellent!
