We too enjoy cemetery hides. In fact, Trekkin’ just called from a new one here in town, which led to this set of questions….

This particular cache listing says it’s available 24/7. It came out last night while the crew was heading home from West Bend, and it’s located in an area ma ruby knows well. Not that they were considering it, but she said if anyone were to search at night, the police WILL be called. When we were in Indiana, it was made very clear in the cache listings these should not be hunted after dark. Thoughts? We’ve come close a couple times heading home, finding them as the sky darkens, but don’t go at night.

My other question…Trekkin’ said it’s clear others were already searching for this one (and of course not posting a DNF). The area is torn up. Badly. He did find it, said it was tough, but also said there was no need for the terrorizing of the grounds he saw. When he posts, he’ll kindly make those observations.

Given that some cachers will go to any length to make finds, should cemetery hides be so hard that it encourages that behavior? I know there are ways to make them challenging without creating a situation that leads to this kind of thing. I was a bit uncomfortable with another one recently that might encourage people to use a marker to gain a height advantage. Again, not necessary if a person slows down and thinks, but people don’t always do that.

      Thoughts?

Most of the cemetery caches I have done or seen tend to be easy. So there is not alot of rummaging around being done. But, there is always some……

Cemetery caches should not be 24/7. Perhaps you should drop a line to the owner of that one.

And yes, in Indiana it is ILLEGAL to be in a cemetery in the dark (dusk to dawn).

marc, that’s been our experience, too, the easy part, I mean. I think if a person wants it to be challenging, you can make it a puzzle or multi that encourages seekers to visit interesting markers to gather information. That also slows folks down and allows them to appreciate the history in these spots, not just the smileys.

Did you do the one on the way to Fort Wayne with the half boulder markers? We had to find nine of those to fill in the coordinates. These were recent markers, the likes of which none of us had ever seen before or since.

P.S. We spotted a cemetery in our area with a Petrified Tree stone. We’ll be looking more closely at that one, hint hint!

Night time cemetery caching has always concerned us. Maybe the Reviewers should make it mandatory to add this concern in the cache text, as well as the 24/7 icon being crossed out on attributes. A few will still try it, but they sure are missing some interesting history.

I noticed the disclaimers in Indiana also. The ISQ seems to be more centrally controlled than the WSQ, so I’m sure that’s where the requirement for the wording comes from. (I may be wrong…)
We (my daughter and I) have done some cemetery caches at night. We were still new and didn’t know better, but at least one of them gave no indication of being a cemetery hide.
Do the reviewers currently suggest the wording seen on most WSQs regarding “not on or near any marker” or something like that?

The cache owner has added comments after reading Trekkin’s log and thanked us. These are creative and enthusiastic newer cachers in our area, so of course we want them to keep hiding.

I think, like Brian said, sometimes when we’re new, we just don’t know differently. It does help to visit these forums, go to events and meet other cachers to help gain perspective. Our biggest concern is always playing so as not to give the game a bad name to the rest of the world.
