I got a friend request from Geocaching.com. He/she just joined today, lists school as occupation and West Allis as home. I have never had this before and not sure how to respond. It could be someone looking for help or could be spam, I am not sure which. I don’t have anyone on my friend list and so don’t know how this works. Has anyone else had any experience with this?

Do YOU live in West Allis too? Maybe it’s someone new looking for a friend and not sure how to meet people.

The friends feature was added with no real explanation. I think you can refuse friends. But once they’ve added you, can you change your mind? I guess they don’t really have any inside info on you, just a quick way to find you.

I probably wouldn’t accept a friend request from someone I didn’t know in person (or at least e-mail correspondence).

No I don’t live in West Allis. The only connection is that I have a cache there. I can refuse him. I think if I accept him then he gets my email address and I may not want that. I am tempted to refuse him but didn’t want to turn off a potential cacher if he is only looking for local help. So I don’t know what to do.

GC does not give out anyone’s e-mail address.

I would refuse his Friend request, but send him an e-mail asking what’s up. Newbie wanting help, whatever……

I believe that once a friends “relationship” is established, you each become listed on the other’s friends list. Right now, that only means you can contact each other easily without having to do a user name search. (No, emails are not disclosed.) Either person can then sever the relationship and you both disappear from the other’s list.

There have been hints that more friends features will arrive in the future, like possibly electing to have email notifications of your friend’s logging activity – or something like that.

I tried to do a name search to find him but since he hasn’t found any caches or doesn’t own one and hasn’t posted to the forums I can’t search for his name.

I believe that if I were in your shoes Lee, I would politely decline with the statement that you would like to be better acquainted first. One must not be indiscriminate in choosing one’s friends. ~tb

Yea, I would at least want dinner first before putting them on my friend list.

Someone mentioned emailing them and asking more about them … at that point, unless you uncheck your “reveal email” check box you HAVE given them your email address.

I did decline him. Unfortunately I was not able to attach any type of statement or explanation. And now I can’t get as his profile to contact him.
