I did not do enough research and wasn’t aware of the DNR’s wishes on caches in State Natural Areas. I placed a cache that was in one of the coolest places I’ve visited in the area and the reviewer archived it:
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=1d342ef4-8b4b-48d6-854f-c2c5 c9259d78I have no problems with it being archived and appreciate the heads up on the DNR not wanting caches in SNAs. I am curious as to why caches are allowed on other DNR lands but not SNAs. Maybe they could allow only micros…
I am frustrated that geocaching.com no longer allows Virtual Caches. I understand that waymarking.com can be used but I personally don’t want to get involved in another site and think that many cachers would miss out on seeing a little-know area with spectacular features.
Anyone with insight on the Virtual Cache thing? Is there an official DNR regulation on SNA caches?

05/07/2006 at 10:00 pm #1750145The purpose of SNA’s is often to preserve Natural Wisconins Lands. They will usually contain some rare flora and fauna which is delicate to human impact. Even the presence of a virtual cache would bring the amount of human impact to a level damaging to the area. Don’t get me wrong. I love to visit SNA’s, because often they are the most beautiful parts of the state. I don’t mind not getting a smiley for the visit if it means I get to see the forests and lands preserved in all thier beauty.
The WGA and the http://www.gc.com reviewers willingly abide by this request of the DNR. This was one of the items brought to the table in our initial meetings with the DNR. Such a simple request seemed easy for us to oblige. There are still a few geocaches in SNA’s for one reason or another. But I hope to see us willingly cooperate with the DNR and help preserve these special places.

There are no shortcuts to any place worth going05/07/2006 at 11:46 pm #1750147So can I use it in a multi-cache?
05/08/2006 at 12:34 am #1750148Uuhh… No.
Just go and enjoy it! I’m thankful for geocaching because that’s how I found out about SNA’s. I can live with only having the other 99.999% of the state to geocache in.

05/08/2006 at 1:01 am #1750149That’s what I figured!
I wonder why the main page says there are 30 topics and 192 posts yet I can only see my topic and related posts?

Probably even more than you though possible!

There are no shortcuts to any place worth going05/08/2006 at 1:43 am #1750151Another question on SNAs: Are there better maps available of the borders? I have looked at the DNR web site and the maps there, and it is really hard to tell where the borders are.

Keep On Cachin In The Free World.05/08/2006 at 1:57 am #1750152Does the link I provided earlier help any? It does have maps? I haven’t looked at them closely though.
edit: I just looked at the maps — ick! Perhaps no help there!

05/08/2006 at 2:59 am #1750153I don’t know if this is of help for SNAs but it is great for other DNR areas. Try it.
http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/facilities/dnr_lands_mapping.html05/08/2006 at 5:20 am #1750154One possible proposal for those who deal with the DNR: What about allowing geocaching in SNAs where hunting is also allowed? I don’t know how many of these there are, but I do know of at least one close to me. I can’t believe that geocachers would do more harm than hunters (in general) given the number of spent shells I carry out of the marshes during deer and duck seasons. The one I am thinking of is Cherry Lake Sedge Meadow, which is smack in the middle of the Honey Creek Wildlife Area and is frequently hunted, particularly during waterfowl season.
