So reading the guidelines for placing a cache. I see the following.
Prohibited Locations: Caches are not allowed in sensitive areas and never in the following specific properties:
National Parks
National Monuments
Wisconsin State Natural Areas (SNAs) (SNAs map) (see exception procedure for EarthCaches)
Archaeological or historical sites
St. Croix National Scenic Riverway (maps)
University of Wisconsin – Green Bay (all properties including Communiversity Park)However I am starting to see caches placed in SNA’s, are they allowed now and our documentation needs to be updated? If you get permission from the DNR person who is in charge of that area is it ok? I have 5 SNA’s close to me I would love to place in, but have avoided it because of the rules, can anyone give me the official word if they have it.
05/10/2010 at 9:06 pm #1928780EarthCaches can be placed in SNAs. Even then, you might get turned down. I really, really wanted to place an EarthCache in Pewits Nest SNA in the Baraboo area, but Thomas Meyer, who has to give the go ahead on all of them, nixed it. There are some eejits who go cliff jumping there and there have been deaths, so the DNR just doesn’t want to encourage traffic there.
🙁
05/10/2010 at 9:07 pm #1928781There should only be virtuals in SNAs like EarthCaches and you need special permission for those…
EDIT I see T&B got to this one first…
05/10/2010 at 9:48 pm #1928782So what about Great River Trail Prairies State Natural Area? Is it because it is attached to a state park? There are atleast 3 in that SNA.

Those do not appear to be in the SNA:

Often SNAs are only slivers within a park.
05/10/2010 at 11:18 pm #1928784according to this from the WDNR, those three are fine as they are not within the boundries of the SNA

just Zoom in on the park area.

05/10/2010 at 11:39 pm #1928785Thanks guys, I guess I didnt dig deep enough and was relying on the label on the google maps, I hope I did not come across as trying to stir something up, I was just confused and still trying to figure out how to pull up maps like lostby7 posted. Is that linked off the SNA page?
05/10/2010 at 11:45 pm #1928786I figured out the map link thing, apparently I was blind earlier.
Ok so another question to clarify this for me please. If I look at this map
http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/er/sna/PDF_topo/map222.pdf
It would be ok to place in the pink assuming permission was granted but not in the blue?05/10/2010 at 11:50 pm #1928787@TheBalks wrote:

Not at all…you were just seeking clarification….this is what the forums are for.
The map I used can be found from this page:

05/11/2010 at 12:40 am #1928788We have caches in DNR fisheries managment areas that have been approved with no problems. Check on the pink only areas, though, because those may be on private property but with easements. It looks like there are other green areas besides the SNA in the area you’re looking at:
Zoom in a few times on the spot in SW Monroe County. Look at the green NE of the SNA.
