Shown here are the estimated attendance statistics for Wisconsin state parks, state forests, state recreation areas, and state trails (fiscal 2018).  It’s interesting to see how well each is visited. We’ve been to all of the state parks (in part thanks to the WGA state park geocache series), but I’m not sure if we’ve visited every one of the other three  types.  ROAD TRIP!!

I knew Devil’s Lake State Park was WI’s busiest, but WOW!

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

Thanks for posting that. Now we know which SPs are the LEAST visited, too!

Looking at the list, I can say we’ve visited every one of those at least once.  I really like Straight Lake, which we’ve visited two or three times.  My first visit, it was pretty undeveloped, but I see things are being added now.  I kind of wish they’d keep it pretty much wild, to be honest.  It’s nice to have at least one state owned place like that in any given state.

A friend is on the board for Friends of Wi State Parks.  He does a program on his own adventures visiting every single state property in a year’s time.  We took a little longer than Jonathan, but then again….we’re older even than his mom and dad!  Slow Caching is where it’s at, LOL

Gwyn, what have they added to Straight Lake SP?  When we were there 3 or 4 years ago there was pretty much nothing man-made, other than a barely developed trail.

It seemed like there was some kind of open shelter when we were there last and it looked like things were being set up to add in.  On the other side, by the IAT, it’s still undeveloped as far as I know.  Maybe I’m misremembering, though.  I do know there was more stuff there than my first visit, though.

No stats for Copper Culture State Park…not unusual since the DNR has little involvement with it. The city of Oconto’s Park and Rec Department maintains the grounds and the Oconto Co. Historical Society maintains the museum. The museum usually attracts in the neighborhood of 1000+ visitors during the summer season though.

Kind of makes me wonder how they come up with their stats. Copper Culture and Strait Lake for example don’t have a gatehouse, and lots of times I drive into a park when there is nobody in the gatehouse. Devil’s Lake for instance has multiple access points.

All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.
