Yes, I know the game can be played however you want and that’s what we pretty much do. I’m just curious if other WGA State Park Trail bosses are choosing to log the caches they helped place. We have another cache that we placed but someone else owns, and so far we’ve left that on our radius, too. (The California/Wisconsin Exchange).

Sorry. Not going to be of much help here. We haven’t decided yet. 😕

There is no reason not to log the caches, but it will seem weird. We don’t feel the need to clear out our radius or anything, but that cache does come up as our closest unfound cache. Maybe when we do maintenance at some time we will sign the log sheet and claim the smiley. Or not.

That’s what I have done with caches that I placed on behalf of Samoset Council. Signed the logs when doing maintenance and logged as finds.

I did log the Hartman cache as it was never actually “my” cache. I submitted it directly from the WGA user on GC.com so no need to adopt it over. A luxury others did not have if not a WGA director. I did however not log the FTF as that would be a bit cheap. I did make a second trip out to sign the log well after the FTF was claimed.

I have suggested to the Trail Bosses that they log the caches. They do not own the caches, even if they did place them. Most owned them only until the publication and then they became ours. I haven’t logged High Cliff but I will when I go out there to do a check up.

I think that if you put in the effort to place the cache and maintain it, you should be able to reap the joy of the smiley.

I believe the majority of TBs have logged their caches.

I wonder if any trail bosses will log DNF’s.

I will…if mine is missing but it is so well done, no one will mess with it.

Maybe when Pooh’s Pal goes to look for them, then. I guess in a sense, we did do that when we checked on the one he hid in a county forest he likes.

He really did hide it himself. We just took the coordinates and wrote up the listing for him. If he’d been allowed to do the write up, it would probably look like this…..PPPPOJhdha.dndn hdhdht %^^^

or words to that effect! 🙄

I just had a similar conversation with Walking Adventure because I couldn’t decide if I should claim them as found or not. I just logged them as found but felt guilty about it. But mostly I liked the idea of having them as smilies when I run a PQ on the series. There’s going to be a challenge eventually (once they all get placed) so I wanted to count them as found. But I’ll admit I felt weird about it, I don’t typically claim my own caches as found. I do know people that do, I guess in the grand scheme of things, they’re just numbers and nothing of any real consequence so people should probably just do what they’re comfortable with.

Oh the woes of the short geocacher!

Same here, Becca, but those aren’t “our” caches anymore, no matter what it feels like. 🙁

Maybe we should save the one we put out to fill that last hole in our calendar come December, especially if there is another blizzard! 😆
(Actually, we have saved a couple of roadside P&Gs for that hole. They aren’t much farther, and it would involve less effort to score the smiley at one of those.)

We went to four state parks this past weekend (some didn’t have the official WGA cache in them yet), and Kim and I just had a discussion about this very topic! What we decided to do is to “probably” find all of the other state park caches (hopefully) when they are all in place and then logs ours last. Then we will go grab the challenge cache for the state park series (assuming there will be a challenge cache forthcoming). That will give us extra motivation (and fun) to pursue this series. It’s going to take a long time though.

For us, the “big four” out there of significance are the Fizzy challenge, the Jasmer challenge, the Wisconsin 72 county challenge, and the Delorme challenge. We’ve completed the requirements for the first three; the latter we look forward to working on and purposely didn’t try to complete it while working on the county challenge (something to look forward to). With the state park series challenge on the horizon, we now think of the “big five” challenges to complete. Fun!

As a trail boss our choice to log our SP cache last is just our choice (for now, subject to change with the wind) and we think it’s fine for trail bosses to log them as found at any time if they desire.

                        Great question!
