I’ve heard a few of the caching legends of “odd things” people have found while looking for a cache (a safe, bones, etc.).
What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever found while caching? I’d love to hear because my experience today at GC21H0X caught me WAY off guard! 😯
Thank goodness I wasn’t with my daughters. They’d never want to go caching with me again! Heck, I’m not sure how I’ll feel the next time I go sticking my head into a cedar tree.
02/16/2010 at 10:47 pm #1922295What is that?!?!?! Most interesting things we’ve found is a loaded hand gun in Milwaukee and a crack pipe in Oshkosh.
02/16/2010 at 10:51 pm #1922296Wow, and it had to be at one of my caches! I’ll be by there this weekend so I will have to stop and see if the cache is actually still where I put it.
There are too many oddities in your stories if I interpret them correctly to believe that this was anything other than someone who got the info off of GC.com and decided to be a wise ass.
Be careful out there!!
02/16/2010 at 10:57 pm #1922297yeah seriously what is that?a cow tongue?
i keep finding letterboxes im up to 5 now.
other than that a dead raccoon twice one 5 ft away from cache.02/16/2010 at 11:01 pm #1922298that is weird……the only question I would have is: why?
02/16/2010 at 11:30 pm #1922299That is a weird one. From the photos, i cant really tell what it is though. A stomach?
Interesting things I have found along the way are stashs of beer, once a full case, once a 12 pack, and beer in other amounts stashed near caches. All ended up going home with me.
Also came across a methamphetamine cook site once in the forest, complete with a pile of discarded chemical bottles. Called the cops on that one. That one was in the MN state forest, found with Seth.
On a dead end road, down by the river, once found a package of unused condoms tucked into a tree. That one was just west of Eau Claire, found alone. (Left em there and WI Zumette is very happy about that choice.)
Found a dead chicken once in a ceremonial box, surrounded by flags and flowers. Googled it when I got home, and learned that it is a Mexican custom, somehow related to appeasing the spirits and honoring the dead. That one was in St Paul., found alone.
And the weirdest to me was the fresh grave we found in a woods, 100 feet away from a cemetery in the woods, complete with a small white cross. It was disturbing to me for awhile, until I told myself that some kids must have buried a favorite pet there. That was on a Marc cache, north of Appleton, found with Robin. We should have called the cops, just in case, but did not.

02/16/2010 at 11:31 pm #1922300believe it or not I have seen much worse than that tongue when I was younger while walking through a frozen swamp. Definitely twisted though.
While cachin though…not much out of the norm…drug paraphernalia and the like.
02/16/2010 at 11:36 pm #1922301We found discarded pot plants at a parking lot, an unsmoked joint IN a cache (got tossed in the lake unused), and most unusual of all was a replica samurai sword, wrapped in a flannel shirt and tied closed with fishing line.
What you discovered is strange indeed. Wonder if someone had to do something bizarre to jump into a gang or cult or something? Please keep us posted if you ever learn more.
Oh, also various dead animals, raccoons a couple times. One was almost literally on top of the cache site, near Spring Valley WI.
02/17/2010 at 12:33 am #1922302That is definitely weird!! I have seen some very strange things near headstones in the past, usually something placed for the deceased. What I mean is maybe the person placed it for his father who’s favorite food was stuffed cow tongue(that’s what the stitching is)…maybe it was a birthday meal tradition or something like that and that day was the aforementioned birthday. That, and a religious thing or something like that.
02/17/2010 at 12:36 am #1922303Pretty confident it was a cow tongue. What made the whole thing creepy was not just finding a chunk of a cow where I did (not that finding it laying in the middle of the woods or on a trail wouldn’t have been a little odd), but the fact it looked to be cut open and stitched back up. All I could think of was some sort of voodoo curse thing or witches hex placed on the person whose grave it was near. Either way I didn’t want anything to do with it and I’m not sure the officer did either!
Those are some other pretty odd things mentioned so far!
02/17/2010 at 12:39 am #1922304Strangest thing I have seen in a cemetery was near my only cemetery cache, when I hid it there were Halloween decorations all over the cemetery. Seemed tacky more than anything. But like muddybottoms points out, I am sure they were placed there to celebrate someone who liked Halloween. They were skeletons, skulls, fake detached hand etc.
No animal parts in trees though…
Maybe the visitor was feeding neighborhood scavenger birds?
02/17/2010 at 12:47 am #1922305Saw it was a cow tongue right away. You can buy them at Stone Ridge in Wautoma, which may be where the authorities will start there search!
Someone using GZ as a sitdown toilet is the worse thing I’ve run into. Didn’t waste any film on it, either!
02/17/2010 at 1:08 am #1922306Let’s see, where to begin. A lottery ticket worth $27 (wait that was a FTF Prize on BakRdz cache).
Strange things include a previously smoked joint inside the cache container on an Evil Monkey cache (removed and discarded, but the scent lingered for a while until I could find an open bathroom to wash my hands – darn winter caching), dead animal skeleton, and a live rat.
Your finding however is truly odd and am I’m curious to see if you hear anything else regarding it.
02/17/2010 at 1:35 am #1922307Hoo boy, let’s see…
At least a couple pinch pipes, the aforementioned possible meth lab cook site with Zuma, a “lonely person product” in one of Chicago’s tree parks, plenty of preventatives, and enough poached carcasses to make up for the shortfall the hunters were seeing in the woods this fall. I’m sure there’s more, but those come easily to mind.
Cow tongue’s pretty cool though. There’s good eating on one of those… 😉 .
02/17/2010 at 1:41 am #1922308I forgot one one how could I forget this one. – While doing a cache near a boat slip in Montello last summer a couple of young ladies started heading from their boat to the small woods I was in. I ducked down behind the pile of logs and they proceeded about their “business”. Eventually one of them spotted me and was extremely startled and wanted to know why I was watching them. Definately an interesting / awkward moment.
