stupid logging question

I was out looking for a cache (Up the River). 300 feet from the cache location, I was stopped by a newly formed inpassable river from the torrential rains.

I posted a note saying I could not proceed to the cache due to high water and would be back to try again. I did not log it as a DNF as I was 300 feet away and was not able to actually look for the cache.

Was I correct in posting the note or should I have posted it as a DNF? The other team I was with posted this as a DNF. I was just wondering about the protocal.

Seeing that you didn’t really have the opportunity to look for it, I think a note is fine.

Remember, if you can cross the water without facing death, there is no excuse for not finding the cache.

If I never actually get to the cache site to look for the cache, I post a note. If I look for the cache at what I think is ground zero and don’t find it, I post a DNF.

When I’m searching for a cache that has DNF’s, I won’t look as long if I can’t find it. If I posted a DNF on something that I never even looked for, it would be giving a false impression to someone that uses that information the same way I do.

This log is an example of both.

In my opinion, you should have posted a DNF. The sole purpose of purple frowny faces is to alert other cachers and the owner that there may be a problem with the cache. If the area of the cache is blocked by a raging river, that’s a problem that I’d certainly like to know about before heading out after the cache myself. Your note may get the message across, but a DNF log is much more likely to get my attention.

I concur with the notion of posting a note. If I never get close enough to look for it, then I haven’t NOT found it! I recently got stopped by high water after a .5 mile hike – and still had .3 miles to go. Posted a note to that effect!

If I’m not able to get close enough to actually perform a search, then I would just write a note. If I’ve actually searched “ground zero” and couldn’t find it, then I would leve a DNF.

There has been many occasions where I’ve aborted a cache hunt once in the general area. In these cases I’ve only left “notes”. I don’t leave a DNF unless I’ve exhausted all attempts to find the cache at the posted coordinates.

Bottom line, do whatever you feel comfortable doing

Searched for it but couldn’t find it? DNF.

If the cache is easy to find once you overcome all the obsticals, such as my Lowe’s Lake #1, posting a DNF if you gave up because of the water could discourage other’s by making them think the cache is hard to find rather than just hard to get to.
