If your like me I get pretty frustrated when I’m driving down the road and my new maps still have errors(missing roads, exits,POI’s, ect.). garmin buys their map data from Navteq, which I think is also the source magellan uses(also google maps).

awhile ago I seen on the geocaching.com forum Navteq has an error submission form you can fill out, I tried this about two months ago when I noticed that city navigator V8 has allot of the same errors that my city select V7 had. yesterday when using google maps I noticed that both of the areas that I emailed about were fixed, and today I got an email back from Navteq telling me that they have fixed the errors.

If we all submit the errors that we find in our travels, we could make the maps we use in our gps receivers that much better.

I’m happy to say that my Magellan has yet to fail me in this way. I have the Meridian collor with Mapsend Streets loaded in (sometimes MapSend Topo) and have not had a problem. Then again, I’ve never taken it more than 300 miles from home yet either.

Funny you should mention this, but NAVTEQ recently had a job opening for Wisconsin to drive around and GPS places for their databases. Maybe once they fill the position your maps will become a little bit better for the state. I always get a laugh reading logs for the ape cache in Illinois seeing how many people were autorouted to the wrong side of the water trying to get there. I always think it is funny, because I actually enjoy sitting down with my atlas and planning my own routes…I actually think that is a great part of the fun of caching! I am a map geek though…at least that is what they called those of us in the GIS department at college.

Does anyone know if there is a similar project/company for trails? The only trails I ever find in my topo maps are in National Parks (not counting railroads which have been converted to trails). I would love to “track” the trails in my favorite parks and upload them to the USGS map database, but so far, I haven’t found anyone who has started this as a project. Of course, there is nothing stopping me from contacting the USGS myself, but I am thinking I am just not finding the project.

And Tyedyeskyguy, the closest missing road I have found to us is Puetz Road in western Milwaukee County. The map database stops at the Root River, but the road actually runs all the way to 76th Street. (But then again, I am using Topo maps. Maybe the road is actually there in the Navteq DB.)

City Navigator v8 North America shows Puetz road running west all the way to Hy 100 – St. Martins Rd. Hopefully it doesn’t stop at 76th 😉

Yes, the formerly missing section was between 68th and 76th. The road does appear to be fairly new (less than 10 years old).
