Here are a couple of experiments to do when the temps are so nasty outside.
#1 Fling hot water into the air out of a cup/mug and watch what happens to it.
#2 Blow bubbles with that kids’ bubble stuff (might work with the dish soap recipe, too) when it’s at least ten below out. What do the bubbles look like? What happens to them when they break?
01/15/2009 at 4:26 am #1900370Oh, thanks. Now my couch is all wet.

Ah you forgot to take it outside. That will happen.
01/15/2009 at 4:48 am #1900372took the hot water outside and it froze before I could fling it 😕

01/15/2009 at 4:53 am #1900373ok i am going to have to try that did it really freeze before it hit the ground
01/15/2009 at 1:42 pm #1900374Ok, this looked like a good thing for the kids to do since there is no school today. So I did a trial run whilst they were sleeping.
The cup of hot water was amazing!
The bubbles…I could not get to work well. Problem number 1, too windy. Problem number 2, bubble solution freezes on bubble blowing stick (seriously). Manazged to get one bubble that appeared to freeze and then fall to the ground and shatter like glass.
I will await other reports…
On the Left Side of the Road...01/15/2009 at 3:14 pm #1900375Ok, the kids thought the water was cool, so we share it with you:

In case you’re interested, cold water does nothing interesting at all.
We did get the bubbles to work somewhat. They fall to the ground frozen then roll around for a bit. Kind of weird but nowhere near the effect of the hot water.
Now, back to work!
On the Left Side of the Road...01/15/2009 at 4:28 pm #1900376My kids are at grandma’s today and on the drive over I told my oldeest (little cheeto) to try these… I told him to tell grandma that they are experiments for his school class that were handed out in case school was cancelled. We’ll see what he reports back to me tonight when I get home from work.
01/15/2009 at 4:32 pm #1900377Another great experiment is watching icicles grow on your eyelashes. I did a couple hours of snow blowing this morning and my eyelashes kept freezing together! 😀
01/15/2009 at 6:01 pm #1900378Neat experiment although the Better Half wasn’t amused when the outside screen door fell off the tracks and then all of the cold air was coming in the house. Good thing it wasn’t being taped!
01/15/2009 at 6:58 pm #1900379i remember a weatherman from duluth quite a few years ago (well, mid 90’s i guess) while i was still in high school doing the water thing, and also using a banana as a hammer.
he was sitting in the news van with a bunch of bananas, peeled one down and took a bite to show they were soft… then grabbed another one, got out of the van, walked around to the back bumper where he had a piece of wood with a small nail started, then used the banana to finish it off.temps in northern wi and mn were between -35 and -40 and we only had school one day that week due to the cold. the following week was 2 hour late starts because we were almost out of weather days.
01/16/2009 at 2:18 am #1900380the report back from the kids is the water trick works if the water is really hot but if it’s closer to luke warm its rather uneventful. they couldn’t find any bubbles at grandmas house to try that one.
will have to try the banana trick too. interestingly enough, if you put sorta ripe bananas in the freezer it does not stop the ripening and they continue to turn brown and then black in the feezer. must be related to this frozen banana hammer trick somehow.
01/16/2009 at 5:05 am #1900381Fox six did a report this morning that showed him pulling a banana from off camera and leaving it on the railing for about 30 seconds as he did something and then he picked it up and proceeded to hit it against the railing until it broke.
01/16/2009 at 5:20 am #1900382i thought it was a good idea to try that today… i put some hot water in a old coffee can, and threw it up… but it didn’t do anything.. when it hit the ground it was still water.. so much for trying to impress the kids with that one.. they just watched me from the window waiting for something cool to happen. lol
01/16/2009 at 3:16 pm #1900383So far, so good on the science experiments. Unfortunately, we are still able to try them in this “lovely” weather. 🙁
