The Summerfest planning committee would like to include a geocaching event that the scouts could participate in while they are there on the grounds. The event date is Sat. July 9th from noon-3pm.
The WGA has a strong desire to support this project, but we need your help.
We are looking for a group of members to spearhead this project, to introduce geocaching to a new generation, to spread the word of the WGA and the sport of geocaching. If you are interested in lending a hand to make this project a reality, please PM me or post your desire to help here.
If you would like to take the reins on the effort, please post that too.
It is a great opportunity to get experience in planning/running and event.Let’s spread the joy of the sport we all love to do to the scouts!

03/09/2011 at 3:36 am #1944302I would like to help out with this project I think we could get a lot of attention with it. maybe we could get vince condella there for a bit on that day
03/24/2011 at 4:41 pm #1944303I have spoken with the folks at Summerfest on this and they are excited to have us help out. Last year’s scout day had about 100 participants with virtually no publicity, so we can expect attendance on the order of 200-300 people. The geocaching event would be one of many activities available to the scouts, so we can assume that we would get around 150 people wanting to geocache. Assuming we group them in teams of 5, we are looking at 30 “expeditions”. If we put out the caches in such a way that we can complete them in a half hour, we are going to need a minimum of 8 people with GPSs to lead the teams, plus another to act as the coordinator at the starting point.
So far, we have had the following people volunteer
Scrappy Scout (1 person)
rcflyer2242 (1)
Averith (2)
Beezers958 (1?)
me (2)rcflyer also said that his scout troop might be interested in acting as hosts. If that happens, we should be good on volunteers (assuming that most of them have a GPS). Otherwise, we clearly need a few more people.
Please note that the Summerfest people will be providing passes for all the volunteers, so if you are looking for a way to get into the festival for free, here is your chance. Again, we are having this on July 9, from noon until around 2 PM.

04/28/2011 at 7:12 pm #1944305I would be interested in helping out with this project . We also have experience in leading expeditions in to the wilderness guidetoo
04/29/2011 at 5:12 pm #1944306Well, guidetoo, I don’t think your wilderness experience will be needed, but we will be happy to have you as a volunteer. Lakeshore State Park is essentially a big pile of rocks that was put into the Milwaukee harbor to make a green space. I think the dimensions are something like a quarter mile by a half mile, with only a handful of small trees. Hopefully we won’t be losing anyone. Thank you very much for volunteering. Do you know how many people will be in your group to help?
04/29/2011 at 6:09 pm #1944307My date for this event is now set and I will be there. Have 2 gpsr that will be available. Myself and James will be there. However dont think Jim will be much help. He will be wearing his class A uniform
06/11/2011 at 7:37 pm #1944308Any more news on this event? Mom wingwalker will also be able to help so that would be 2 helpers for us. The cub scout pack that i was hoping would help will not be available it is their annual canoe trip. The total for us as helpers will be 2 but 4 total have to bring the scouts also. One WEBELOW and one Girlscout.
06/13/2011 at 2:13 am #1944309I was at the grounds for the Gathering Waters event yesterday and noticed that the Scout event was NOT on their brochure. I will have to call them on Monday and see what is going on.
07/05/2011 at 12:24 am #1944310Well, after about 10 unreturned phone calls from the Summerfest guy, we are going to have to call this a “no go” for this year. We can try again next year if they want us to. What I’ve learned from this is that we need to set up ALL the details with these people at least 4 weeks before the event, since they become unreachable as the event gets closer.
07/05/2011 at 1:17 am #1944311Well, that is unfortunate…
Thanks to all who did volunteer to assist on this. sorry that there were communication snafus.

07/05/2011 at 11:59 am #1944312Darn. Just might have to go ride the elroy/sparton trail with the boy scouts then.
07/05/2011 at 7:39 pm #1944313I’m sorry to read this. I just found out that we’ll be in town this weekend and I wanted to sign up to volunteer. If by chance you hear anything and it’s “on”, please let me know and we’ll be down there to help out.
07/05/2011 at 8:57 pm #1944314nothing listed on the Summerfest activities list about Gecocaching or WGA but looks like the Scout Day admission promotion is still valid
Saturday, July 9 – 12:00 – 3:00 pm – is Scout Day. All Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast in uniform will receive one (1) FREE admission ticket at the South Gate Promotions Booth, valid from Noon – 3:00 pm.
Now, does that mean that if you are not B/G scout of Wisc Southeast councils, you can’t get in for free?
