I would like to invite anyone who may be interested in attending Survivor III – North Manitou Island event. This past year we worked hard to pick the date a ways ahead of time to give everyone plenty of time to make plans for this unique and rare backpacking event. You will have the opportunity of seeing natural beauty at its finest while learning a lot about yourself.
Some info about North Manitou Island:
North Manitou sits in the middle of Lake Michigan between Michigan and Wisconsin. 15,000 acres of wilderness with a visitor use concept that emphasizes solitude, self-reliance and a sense of exploration. Camping on North Manitou is “open”: you choose the campsite! The primary visitor activities include hiking, swimming, backcountry camping and backpacking. The island itself is home to a large whitetail deer herd and is the summer range for a variety of raptors (including the Bald Eagle). In the fall, special trips are available for hunters.
North Manitou Island is home to some of the most unique parts of the United States. Roughly 5% of the land mass in the U.S. is officially designated by Congress as a Wilderness Area. Of that 5% number – 3% is wilderness in Alaska. The remaining 2% is scattered thoughout the rest of the country. Be part of hikers and backpackers who have been on North Manitou Island.
Feel free to PM me with any questions or post them here.
01/05/2010 at 3:12 pm #1919575For those considering this, I can comment that this would be a really cool place to visit, as Seth and I visited South Manitou last year. It is essentially an unimproved island in Lake Michigan with great scenery.
For anyone in WI, it would be a long drive though, and that is the main downside.

01/05/2010 at 8:05 pm #1919577I have the permission for more earth caches – shot coordinates last year. Will be doing the write ups before the event. You can count on at least another two or so hopefully more.

Although I have not yet visited South – I am aware of motorized tours on South.
You won’t find that on North! During (mandatory) orientation – the ranger tells you be smart, be safe = stay alive. No helicopter rides unless life threatening. From what I heard – guy broke his ankle – took 12 hours or so to be rescued! Once you hit the wildesness area – even the ranger hoofs it like everyone else.
Current plans are an event on South this year too – one that is day tripable.
01/05/2010 at 11:04 pm #1919579We’re seriously considering this, thanks for the heads up. Trekkin’ was born a Yooper but he’ll go below the bridge! (which is how we’d travel there, anyway). [;)]
01/06/2010 at 12:13 am #1919580i put this on my watch list and than later that night it was on the WGA forum.
