So now picture this….. There is a long line of terrorist standing in line at GC dot com to buy their geocaching stickers, so the can put them on their pipe bombs. Stickers aren’t the savior to this problem. It’s the law enforcement and bomb squad using a little common sense. BTW if I was the cache owner I would have deleted that log from the fireman (Firehogs) so fast it would have made his head spin. Just my 2 cents worth.

Maybe the Bomb Squads should have a geo-cacher on retainer. Send him over to check it out first.
This bomb squad literally did. And it didn’t do any good.
I’m going to make a container that looks like one of those Wiley Coyote black ball bombs and paint “Official Geocache” on the outside of it.
Oh wait, there’s already one like that hanging in a park in the area, but it’s green with no camo tape so it must be ok… 😯
On the Left Side of the Road...03/16/2009 at 9:06 pm #1903857Well…….Lots of discussion going on here. I’m the Fire Captain (Incident Commander) that responded to the “Bomb Call”.
I want to thank the people that had nice things to say in their posts (especially the one who understands my job, Zuma I think, & the contact person I sent this info to, Greyhounder, who understood the point I was trying to make about proper labels & education). There were others who seem to “get it”, also. As far as some of the others, I have a few comments.1. the container had a string attached to it to pull it out of the tree (looked like a wick perhaps?)
2.No, I won’t gamble on 1%- my crew goes HOME at the end of the shift- not in a bag.
3. The Bomb Squad has policies & procedures to follow- they go home too.
4. I educated the Sheriff Dept, Bomb Squad, Media & fellow cachers the best I could so maybe this could be avoided in the future.
5. My first post stating the cache “needs maintenance” was deleted. Too bad- it was a dandy.
6. I logged it as a find as a “tongue in cheek” type thing. The owner at least got it because he left it. Yes, I spoke to him after the incident. FYI, I talked the BCSD out of giving him a ticket for this. I held firm he did nothing wrong.
Now, it’s nice outside- we should be “Caching- not bashing”. NO KIDDING, I just made that phrase up! If you don’t like that- turn your computer off HA HA HA.
Really……… be careful out there. That’s an Order.

Captain Bryan Becker (Firehogs)
Allouez Fire DepartmentThanks for stopping by Captain.
Pull up a chair and stay awhile were good folks.03/16/2009 at 9:59 pm #1903861Thank’s Captain, I am glad you stopped in to add some balance to the thread.
03/16/2009 at 11:39 pm #1903862First, my apologies on being so critical.
Second, thanks for the insight into what went into the decision to “extinguish” the suspicious device.
03/16/2009 at 11:56 pm #1903863I guess we have all learned to properly label our caches. Firehogs was just doing his job and there isnt anything wrong with that.
03/17/2009 at 12:02 am #1903864First, thanks again to the Captain for commenting on all of this.

This is especially true for placements around playground equipment. When you place these, be sure to NOT tell your finders to be sneaky. Instead, encourage them to interact with the neighbors. Most people who are watching would really like to know what you are doing, so telling them removes the threat. Its true that one person in 100 will disturb the cache, but most people will be respectful and probably have fun “helping” finders in the future.
I agree! I give presentations to other teachers to try and get them to incorporate caching in their classrooms – EVERYONE I talk to (teacher or not) gets interested in what we do and almost always wants to learn more. Furthermore, people are MORE than willing to help if they know what’s there.
Enjoy some great weather days – I unfortunately am sick and on the couch. 🙁
03/17/2009 at 12:12 am #1903865Having talked with the Fire Captain about this incident today and heard there were a lot of posts on the topic, I thought I would join in and share some thoughts. First off caching community, sorry for the disruption.
I was the last official find of the cache. Out early on Suday morning around 7:30. From the time I parked, found the cache, signed the log, and back to my vehicle was about 12 minutes. I did not see a single person. If I had, I would have been happy to share what I was doing.
I don’t think I look like a terrorist or I acted very suspicious, I guess it is what it is.
My applolgies to tkks for his cache being jeopardized and destroyed. Obviously not my intention.
And I fully uderstand that our public safety officials have a serious job to do. Thank you.
I’m faily new to the game (about 50 finds), and really enjoy it and try to do it right. We shall . . . cache on. wise river rambler
03/17/2009 at 1:07 am #1903866I watched the film coverage of this incident on 2 of the Green Bay TV stations last evening. It showed 3 officers walking alongside the robot in regular uniforms, not bomb suits. The suggestion of the newscast was the robot was carrying the suspected bomb. However, perhaps they were just walking the robot up to the “bomb”, not carrying it off.
The thought did cross my mind that if they were really worried about a bomb they might have been using different procedures and protective gear…

03/17/2009 at 1:12 am #1903867Thanks, Bryan.
All things considered, it works out well. These discussions ALWAYS get out of hand with SOME people making weird comments! I WILL NOT name names, but you’all know who I mean ……
03/17/2009 at 1:22 am #1903868These discussions ALWAYS get out of hand
Looking back at this thread, there was never a time that things got “out of hand” and I don’t see many “weird” things to point at either.
03/17/2009 at 1:58 am #1903869I stand by everything that I said. I believe what was “out of hand” was how this was handled in the field and nothing presented here has convinced me otherwise.
That is my opinion. Others have theirs, and they are fully entitled to them and to express them.
