Lately we have visited quite a few caches with Playdo as swag. I have also noticed that silly putty is being used. My question is: Don’t those things have smells that might attract critters? I think almost everyone knows not to put food in the caches, but what do you think about Playdo and things like that? My inclination is to let people know those items may cause a problem.
Your thoughts?
I think that it gives off too much odor, of whatver kind of stuff they make it out of.
I have critters trying to get into my caches that are in containers that never contained anything with a scent, so im assuming that would cause some problems. I never realized how many small critters live in and around areas I made my hides, until I found all the tiny chew marks. They have never seen plastic, and want to chew it to find out if its food, etc-
Id be tempted to CITO it, but I’ve never run into that in a cache, or felt I had to remove anything for my opinion on it being good or bad, so . . . .
With heat, cold, critters and so on, I just dont think it is a good thing to leave in the woods. Oh, and the non natural aspect, I dunno what that stuff is made of, but if it isnt nature happy, then you have that problem too. . . .

Playdo can be made at home with a mixture of flour and other things. So ……….
I have made my share of “home made playdo” Taught kindergarten for 33 years. However what I am finding in caches is the commercial kind. They usually are scented.

For an example, check out “Andrae Outback” … it was just set to “inactive” by the approvers at my suggestion … the owner claimed in the past the a PERSON stole it, which makes no sense since it’s not at all in a human activity area, but yet right in the cache listing he says he put dog raw hide treats in it. Then he hid a new container and put raw hide in it again. Dahh … what is he thinking!!! It’s been reported missing by cachers, but I found the container chewed up (most likely by a fox).
Bears also like the scent of sharpie markers and film, so it is not always things we think of that attract critters.
I know someone use to put toothpaste samples in caches but the raccoons and probably some bear went after those. When the kids were young we would not let them have vitamins, lip gloss, gum or any candy in their tents just to be safe. The only bear problem we had camping was when we had chocolate in our cooler.
