I have a Garmin GPSMAP 60C. I will be taking a trip next month and I am wondering about taking it on the airplane with me. Will the unit be affected if I put it in my carry on and it goes through the x-ray macine? Or should I carry it and hand it around the x-ray? Or put it in check baggage?
Take it with you and get a window seat.
I have flown for many years with my GPSr, and there’s only one airline that I remember that (at the time) prohibited GPSr use. Just check in the back of the in-flight magazine.
Hold the antenna part at the bottom of the window and turn it on. You will be able to see where you are, how fast you are going and your altitude. It’s really neat and it helps pass the time.
If there’s clear weather, you can identify all of the roads, lakes and little towns along the way. If you set your destination in as a waypoint, it will also tell you when you are going to get there.
My GPSr has been through a lot of x-ray machines with no ill effect.
We’ve taken our GPSr on commercial planes many times. In fact the last time we hooked it up to our computer (which we have MS Streets and Trips) and watched which cities (large and small) that we flew over.
We have had ours through the x-ray machine many times and have had no ill effects.

I’ve taken mine with me as well and on my last trip the guy right next to me had his out as well…LOL.
I’ve done it, but had to hold the darn thing up against the window. Most uncomfortable. But it was still cool.
Also — check the web site for the airline. I flew on Southwest a couple years ago and checked their web site. It specifically stated what electronics were either 1)specifically banned period; 2)could be used at the gate AND in-flight; 3)could be used in-flight
In the case of Southwest, the GPS was OK in-flight. I also had printed out that page of the web site and took it with me just in case the flight attendant was unsure about GPS usage.Our first Magellan got broke while in our regular luggage (non carry on)on flight to Florida. We landed in Orlando, retrieved our luggage and was saddened when we noticed our trusty Magellan was broken beyond repair. We went to the closest Wal-Mart and bought another one. Since then, we always take our Magellan on the plane in Professor’s brief case. Live and Learn. Tami
