What fun! We have managed a whole one earthcache so far ourselves, but hope to do many more. This is quite the road trip, congratulations to you all!
09/26/2007 at 12:21 am #1879247What Earthcache did you guys do in Kentucky?
When I was there in August, I hit one called ‘LBL-Iron Furnaces’.. the history there was just erry. That one was located just east of Paducah.Did you do ‘Quaking in Volo’ in Illinois? I saw the biggest birds I’ve ever seen there…. couldn’t find the meat eating plant though. 😀
We did Quaking but there were no Earthcaches in KY that we could get to, so we did a cpl of traditionals.
09/26/2007 at 1:02 am #1879248Birds? You’ve got my attention, Brett. What did they look like? Did you figure out what they were?
Still Earthcache-ownerless in West Salem…..
09/26/2007 at 1:13 am #1879249I thought that would get your attention!!
Here’s the link:

09/26/2007 at 1:20 am #1879250Brett, Ah. Sandhill Cranes. They are prehistoric looking, aren’t they?
Here’s a whole family picnic of them.

I saw them in Grantsburg (Crex Meadows), I saw them at the WGA Campout at Hartman’s Creek as well as Volo. Your picture… WOW What an amazing shot. That baby one looks so funny, it’s parents, so graceful. Nice Job!

Is that a Dodo? I got a wasp / hornet bite (or sting) at “Quaking in Volo” that hurt for three days! That sucker was almost as big as the bird in the picture!!!
Hey don’t feel bad I have a Earthcache burning a hole in my pocket too…….it’s been done for two weeks….still waiting for permissions from the location I want to put it. Even if I get the permission (which will be no earlier than Thursday…and possibly not at all) it will still be another week or so before it gets published. What was it Yoda said….”patience young Jedi.”

It’s odd you mention getting stung in Northern Illinois hitting an Earthcache, I was hitting an Earthcache near Round Lake,IL called ‘We Kame, We Conquered’ and I git stung by this huge wasp. Must be an Illinois thing? 😮
P.S. I don’t know about you, but I’m going to be taking Anne up on her offer to accompany them on their next hard core Earthcache run…. how awesome is that?

http://birdbrainedstories.blogspot.com/2006/06/birding-connecting-one-to-all-of.htmlTHANK YOU BIRDIN’ AND TREKKIN’!! i have been trying so hard to find out what those birds are! i see them everywhere!! and i have not been able to figure out what they are!! thank you for finally putting a mystery to rest for me!! those things are freakin huge!! when i first saw one i thought it was a Crane or a Heron, but i thought no way we are no where near water and they were walking in a corn field that was just cut.. then i saw them all the time when i drive through the country… finally i can put that mystery to rest!! thank you!!
09/26/2007 at 9:47 pm #1879255I think we’ve totally hijacked this thread now, but glad to be of service, Coastiegirl!
I *think* I’m going down to Beloit on Friday to see a really rare bird that’s been hanging out there. And caching my way there and back. How close is Whitewater to the interstate? There are a couple earthcaches near there!
09/26/2007 at 10:01 pm #1879256This thread as be assimilated… Resistance is Futile!
I was thinking that there should be an ‘Ask the Expert’ thread on here. I don’t know how many times I’ve been caching and seen some strange bird and wondered what exactly it was. If it’s not a pheasant or a turkey, I’m lost. We have our own ornithologist that can answer our questions. How does that sound Gwyn?? 😀
09/26/2007 at 10:18 pm #1879257I can make up stuff as good as the next guy! LOL

Is that the hummingbird I read about? The green breasted something or other that only lives in mexico.
09/27/2007 at 12:55 am #1879259Yup, that’s it. Green Breasted Mango. I’m feeling a bit like a traitor to my green birding ethics, but heck. People are driving there from West Virginia and Ontario to see this bird, driving three hours is nothing compared to that!
There are 15 other North American records. All but one was just north of the Rio Grande. The other was in North Carolina. Ornithologists are hoping it will figure out it needs to head south before too long. Someone mentioned otherwise trapping it and placing it at the rainforest display in Olbricht Gardens, but that was just talk.

Hijacked thread? Ok. I’ll play. Now does that bird have a fruity flavor or is it like most, and taste like chicken? 😆
