Reading this topic reminded me of a similar old-time technology discussion in these forums. I did a search and found it here: http://wi-geocaching.com/forums/Forum8/HTML/000379.html

I, too, started with a TRS-80 Level 1 in high school. It even came with the schematic! I browsed electronics catalogs and bout RAM chips to updrade it from 4k to 16k !! That’s K — Not M!! And boy — those cassette tapes. If youdidn’t have the volume on the cassette recorder just right, it was CLOAD all over again!
I jumped up to an off-brand 8080 processor-based machine in about 1987. Had an Amiga 500 for a while too. Very much ahead of the PC’s in graphics & sound at that time.
Now I have 5 PC’s plus a laptop that I can turn on and run. Several more pieces/parts besides. Just got a PDA about a month or two ago. So I’m starting to go paperless.
Basically, if it’s electronic in some way, I probably have it or want it. Powered by batteries? Has LED’s? Makes beeping sounds? Fits in my pocket or on my belt? COOL!!! GIMME!!!

Strolling through the past would not be complete without checking out this un-official TRS-80 website …
      http://skylane.kjsl.com/trs80/index.html

It brings back great memories … specifically 4k of memory and only having 3 error messages, on of which was “Sorry”, which meant you filled all your memory, which didn’t happen often back then. The other thing I forgot, the TRS-80 monitor, was basically a black/white TV without the TV-tuner guts … in fact when I wired 2-wires from my BETA vcr’s rca output to the monitor, you could watch The Brady Bunch on the monitor.

I used auto-routing on our new GPS for the first time last weekend while hunting Mission Impossible, after having been a Luddite about GPSs in vehicles for a long time. Very cool!

We are middle ground in the use of technology. We do download waypoints at times, but not cache pages. Our GPS has a basic mapping which we supplement with a Garmin program for our home area and if we are going on a trip to another area, but mostly we use paper. I also keep notes on the paper of waypoints, flowers, birds, etc types of hides that I might not mention in the log. I decided to print our logs also. And that is what now makes interesting reading. Here are some early stats. Logs printed on 1/1/02 had Cachecows 85, Kbraband 81, Socko 62, badlatitude 32, Sbukosky 15, and us 3. The logs printed 2/24/02-2/25/02 had Kbraband 113, Cachecows 112, Yawningdog 82, Cachew 66, Grousetales 62, Sbukosky 48, pharmteam 29, Jthorson 13.

If you really believe that we are on the cutting edge, please see the mosaic from the Moscow subway station at http://www.dni.ru/news/art/2004/10/27/51798.html
        The Mosaic is dated 1954
