A few of the members of opencaching.us also use terracaching.com and brought this up in the forums. Apparently on Sunday night Scott O posted this on the TC forums:
It is no secret that AngryKid has been working on recoding terracaching.com for years. Users’ interest has suffered the same fate, in the face of unmet expectations to completely retool the site. In any situation like this, the evaluation must be made whether or not continue. In this case, the AngryKid’s decision is that he will not continue.
Assuming that there is no other interest in taking over the terracaching.com, as of December 31st, 2010, the site will shut down. Any premium memberships still in effect at that time will be refunded for the balance of their remaining duration.
Thank you for your participation, cooperation, patience, and involvement in this community.
That being said, if there is interest in either assuming the site, or being part of a community that assumes control and development of the site, email [email protected]. I will help facilitate that reorganization.
11/30/2010 at 5:21 pm #1939223I’m shocked it “lasted” as long as it did.
11/30/2010 at 5:55 pm #1939224I tried checking it out once, but was turned off by the sponsorship requirement as well as the “need to find so many so often to stay a member” clause. I just don’t cache that frequently and there really didn’t seem to be many in the area, so I just moved on.

Agreed. The requirements were lame and we were clearly not the only folks who thought so.
11/30/2010 at 7:32 pm #1939226I was able to get “in” but once there, had no interest in doing anything. Opens up a new space for Garmin’s new site….
Following the signals from space.
12/03/2010 at 12:47 am #1939227I received an email from TC this afternoon, it said,
“This is to inform you that your sponsor, ‘*****’, has revoked your sponsorship. If this is a surprise, you’ll need to ask them about it. I’m just an automated bot, and don’t understand humans or any of the things they do. Without sufficient sponsorship, your access to the site has been restricted. You must have two qualified members sponsoring you for full access. I’m sorry for the unfortunate inconvience, but this is a natural part of the process in a sponsorship based community.
I believe this might have been an automated message that has to do with the site closing, and really has nothing to do with my sponsorship being “revoked”

I think we got the same thing a couple of years ago after not being active on the site for too long a period of time. It turned us off to the entire concept and we never looked back.

Ya, I recieved the same thing. It seemes that a few of the “old Guard” of TC left and now seem to be at the OC. I have 1 TC and it’s only been found 2 or 3 times Passing Wind as many north of me, but he’s been M.I.A for a couple of years now, but I hear there was a PW sighting a couple of months ago.
12/04/2010 at 12:05 am #1939232there’s always PW sightings… just have to know where to look. 😉
