Ok, I know the basics about coins.
But if I wanted to make a custom coin, where is the best place to go?
And I’m thinking I want my coin to look along the lines of my avatar.
Any suggstions?01/17/2010 at 2:03 pm #1920415Chris,
We had our coin made at http://www.personalgeocoins.com/
They were not the cheapest, but service was very good. Owner is actually a geocacher in Michigan (And a reviewer) Rusty of Rusty and Libby.
There is a new company that is associated with Geocoin Club that you might want to try http://www.directmint.com/
Also check the national forums on GC. there is a thread there
Send some kind of idea or artwork to a couple of companies, and get quotes, shop around. there is a complete list of coin companies that make geocoins here

They have an option with a generic back, which reduced the price a bit. If we ever want to buy more, we won’t have to pay the set-up fee again. I think that’s pretty standard across companies. I know many also use oakcoins.
01/17/2010 at 3:06 pm #1920417What has any/everyone paid for their 1st runs of coins?
01/17/2010 at 7:22 pm #1920418The price of coins is varried, lots of variables Size Thickness, number of colors die cut, cut out holes, number of metals made, quanity produced, etc.
Our coin was 2″ round 4mm thick, 10 colors on front, 6 on back, cut out in the middle, had 3 metals made a total of 250 run
its been 3 or 4 years since we made them, but it was around $1,800 for what we made then.

YEOWCH! You have to be real serious about coins to invest that much. I just want two…but everyone says 100 min..makes fiscal sense on their side.
01/18/2010 at 5:56 am #1920420Sweetlife’s coins might be a little on the high side, but probably because their coin is HUGE. One of my favorites.
01/18/2010 at 9:28 pm #1920421How about going with pathtags?
01/19/2010 at 1:35 am #1920422Finding a pathtag is not nearly as exciting as finding a geocoin.
Wish they wouldn’t have came up with them and a lot of other similiar things. But they are a lot cheaper and makes it easier for everyone to afford to make one if they want and it is another chance for GC to bring in more money for selling the tracking numbers for them.
01/19/2010 at 1:58 am #1920423GC doesn’t sell tracking numbers for pathtags. That is one reason they can cost as little as $1 each.
01/19/2010 at 3:21 pm #1920424I’ve thought about purchasing a custom geocoin as well. I would only want to buy one though. I think we’d both be looking for some place that charges under $30 for a single coin. I already know where I’ve been, I want to see where it will go 😀
01/19/2010 at 3:37 pm #1920425I was actually thinking of 100 coins or so, and thought the price tage woul d be around $400 or so, but I don’t know if that will work. I FIRST need to convince the wife. And that aint going to be easy. I do turn 40 this summer and was thinking along those lines. I may have to look into pathtags instead.
01/19/2010 at 4:04 pm #1920426I think you can get 100 path tags for less than $400. It’s like $100 for the first 50, then you can order more. If you want your design to be basically your avatar, it should fit easily on a path tag and look pretty good.
Path tags don’t necessarily travel like geocoins do (though they can), but then geocoins go missing a lot. If you just want something to share with friends, trade with others, or to just place in caches to “share the cheeze”, I would go with the path tags.
01/19/2010 at 4:16 pm #1920427Chris, keep your eyes open for a coin “project” like the one that was done for MWGB a couple of years ago. A group of people get together and split the cost of a common coin design. They can be personalized with your own caching name and possibly custom colors. The coins themselves aren’t much less expensive, but you can get a lot fewer coins. For the MWGB project, 20 coins was $150.
