Got up at 5:30am this morning (actually was woken up by my friend’s cat. I’m kitty sitting) rarin’ to do some cachin’. But where’s my GPS? Not in the bag where it’s supposed to be. Checked all possible locations in my house (and my house it fairly neat at the moment, so it’s easy to find stuff.) Checked my trucked, checked my parents’ van. Nope. I last remember having it Feb. 29 at the Rock Lake cache. After that….
So off to Wal-Mart. I am now the owner of the Magellan SporTrak Map. Tried it out on The Hills of Rome cache, but I still have to get the whole thing figured out.
This is a nice unit, but I do miss my Geko. I was planning to upgrade, just not so soon.
Did I select okay? This one seemed to have the features I wanted, and wasn’t horribly expensive.

03/07/2004 at 3:43 am #1746460I don’t own a Magellan, but based off the popularity I think you will be happy with your purchase.
One of the first things I did after purchasing my GPSr was invested in a nice clip-on strap that attaches to the unit. When i’m out and about, the strap is wrapped around my wrist, neck, or belt loop.
You can have my GPS………when you pry it from my cold, dead, hand.
03/07/2004 at 4:12 am #1746461I was just reading up on GroundSpeak about stress cracks appearing on some of Magellan’s products……hope mine will be okay.

03/07/2004 at 4:17 am #1746462I think the stress crack bug has been worked out. They are just trying to figure out the dates in which the problem units exist…
I wouldn’t think you’d have a problem anymore… but… keep an eye on it…
Good Luck with the new unit!

Team Flushingrouse03/07/2004 at 3:24 pm #1746463Well, you’ve taken your parents out and about a few times caching and maybe got them hooked? And they have your Geko now? (Just kidding!)
Congrats on your new purchase! 🙂 Hope you really like it. I happen to have a Garmin so I don’t know much about the Magellan. I have a lanyard attached to my GPSr – it hangs around my neck when I’m not holding it.
Enjoy your new toy!

03/07/2004 at 6:28 pm #1746464I upgraded recently to the Mag SporTrak Map also. I’ve just about figured out all the cool features this thing has! If you don’t have MapSend Topo Software to go with it I highly recomend it! Highly Recomend it! It contains all the Streets & Trips type stuff and the Topo features are fantastic! Get yourself used to it using the basics. Take your time and customize it to your liking. Then learn about the more advanced features… You will be hooked!
I, too, read about the strees crack thing but I believe the newer ones are not susceptible. I do have one warning though. The wriststrap thing that comes with it is nice but if you attach it to the battery door loop thing you may loose the strap or your GPS. It’s not the most reliable place to hook it on… but as far as I’ve figured out its the only place?!?!
Good Luck, Have fun and If you got any questions I’ll try to help!
See you on the trails…

Co-conspirators to make the world a better place…03/08/2004 at 2:53 am #1746465My dad told me today that if I find my Geko he would buy it from me (he suggested $10 — the goof!) and my mother thinks the Geko was much easier to understand than the SporTrak. I’m about halfway through the manual. I’ve sort of figured out how to download waypoints.
As to the stress cracks — I have the same dat code of at least one other person who has cracks in their unit (DC 3603) but it seems that the company is fairly willing to correct the problem. Anyway, we’ll see.

03/08/2004 at 2:54 am #1746466Whose to say what is the best now a days? I just had to return my brand new Garmin 60c because the USB connector went bad. I think GPS’s are like cars. They all get you where you want to go. It just what you want to be be seen in, or with, in this matter.
