Forums Geocaching in Wisconsin General Thoughts on a single puzzle solve with multiple loggers

I was just wondering what thoughts cache owners have on these cache and puzzle tours, where 1 person might solve the puzzle and a bus load of cachers tag along and log the find. I myself have 64 puzzles posted and could care less on how 60 or so of them are found or logged. I do have 2 or 3 that i put a lot of time into and would prefer that they be read, studied and solved in the manner suggested. If you are given the solve to any puzzle, then that puzzle instantly becomes a traditional. I am not excluding myself from this last statement in any way, as I have been given solves and/or clues to puzzles myself. Geocaching is a game with few rules and everyone plays it differently. I would like to hear peoples thoughts on the grand tour aspect of caching.

I’m a solve it / find it kind of person, but I know that’s just me and others play the “game” differently. I personally enjoy the thrill of solving the puzzle and have solved a few puzzles that I’ll probably never “find” based on location.

I think all cachers should read the entire description of the cache page and try to respect the intent of the cache owner. Since ALR’s have been banned it’s a little harder to make some things work the way they were intended. It should all be respect for the sport and owner. (Example – I’ve been working on the Laughing Water series in Menasha for a while and have saved the intended last cache to do as the last cache. This is no longer a requirement due to ALR’s being banned, but I think it shows respect for the spirit of the series.)

I believe that all loggers should make an attempt at solving the puzzle before finding it. There’s always a log type called “note” that could be used to note finding the cache without solving the puzzle. (Example – I just did this on one of the WSQ 9xx caches where I signed the log but don’t have a picture to post.)

When collaborating with one or more other cachers to solve the puzzle, I think it’s important for everyone to understand the concepts behind the puzzle although not everyone is going to solve every little piece (Example – I collaborated on Sagasu’s Sinister Sementic Search but the CO was aware and it was a great experience).

The bottom line is to have fun, have a good time, and enjoy the spirit of the game. I commend the great puzzlers in the land of Sellzup because you’ve provided me hours and hours of great fun and entertainment and have taken me to many places I would have never gone had it not been for your puzzles.

Depends on what you mean by “bus load”.
GC can be, and is, a team game after all.

There’s no way to enforce it, but there might be a way to make them feel bad about doing it.

You know how there are terms for different types of geocachers? Some are armchair or phantom cachers, your FTF hounds, then you’ve got your numbers chasers, and muggles (non cachers), and whatever other terms might be out there.

How ’bout you call bus load cachers “Parasite Cachers”? Once they finally recognize themselves as being Parasite Cachers they may eventually feel a little shameful of their actions, and just stop being a caching parasite.

Here’s another idea: For your puzzle caches, put a note in there saying, “Caching groups of 4 or more, please, only 1 log for your entire group.”

would that be an ALR? Or could that be more appropriately called a NOT-LR?

Or this: rather than writing a note on your cache description page, put a note in the actual cache about how you feel about busload caching. They may get the idea.

    Hi Peach,

I think what you are looking for has been beaten to death recently in this poll:

    Maybe not?

No Splash we are a creative bunch we can find many many many ways to beat the dead horse.

How about everyone stop putting out puzzle caches and there would be no issues surrounding them. It is the only type of cache I see (besides temps) where the open hostility, belittling and punch throwing begins forcing any attempts at rational and constructive discussion out the window.

I’d like to suggest that folks stop, take a deep breath (again) and scroll through that referenced thread and read what GMO has to say.

It’s a nice day. Go out and cache, walk the dog, look for birds, play in the puddles with your kids. I am saying this as me, myself and I, and not as a member of the WGA Board. Some things are important, and some are not. Playing in the puddles with your kids is important. Hostility, shaming others and arguing endlessly over puzzles….is not. My opinion only.

Yep. If the snow consistency cooperates, we’re planning on building a snowman today with two little girls (almost 5 and 2) who are visiting this weekend. That’s after we go out to a pancake breakfast at the church–all you can eat!

And continue to read GMO’s post.

    How about cutting the negativity?

You have a right to your opinion, others have theirs.

    #1923410

    Pot, meet kettle.

    #1923411

Any negativity you may have found in my post was implied by the OP, yet you’ve singled me by quoting me, why?

You say to me to “cut the negativity”, yet you go on to say that that I have a right to an opinion, as do others.
OK, Im confused here. So what you’re saying is, I’m entitled to an opinion as long as it’s not negative? 🙄

What is it exactly about my post that you wish to make an issue of?
The OP has a dislike for busloads of cachers that visit his puzzle cachers. He’s obviously the one with a negative opinion of such cachers, not me.
All I did was offer a creative solution.
It’s a discussion forum. Thats what people do here. They discuss.

I did say, “GC can be, and is, a team game” (you even quoted it)

Trying to make someone feel bad about what they are doing?

    Calling them a parasite?

    #1923413

Give it all a rest. In the end how does any of this matter?

    #1923414

If and when we ever place a puzzle cache, It will not be a park and ride find, where you could even think of getting a bus within a mile of it. That will keep the “parasites” away.
